Rosa got death threats. Many of the things she did could have got her killed. Martin Luther King Jr lost his life. His non violent method worked, rosa didnt necessarily advocate non violence but she knew King.

She was also a christian although it doesnt mention her faith specifically in her autobiography, she did pray in mixed race womens prayer groups until they werent allowed to meet anymore.

Rosa moved to detroit because her brother moved there. In montgomery she was let go of her job (or resigned) and so decided to make a new life up there. She very busy being secretary to activist organisations and got speaking engagements etc. she had a high school diploma but white folk wouldn employ her for anything more than domestic work ...this prejudice still exists today amongst the different races.

There were other women who didnt give up their seat on the bus but only rosas case went to trial at the supreme court, it was because she was a willing test case or pariah.

It seems she got along with white folk up north way better than the ones in the south as they treated her as a human being.

Segregation was worst in birmingham alabama.

The white folk tried to sabotage the bus boycott and even though the law was appealed and changed the hearts and attitudes of the white folk esp those in leadership like the city councillors and police, were unrepentant.

okay...what race is now restricted to domestic work?...I'd say the high school education is what would limit someone now and not race or even sex...

Also it seems Rosa didnt have any children, although she was married. The bus incident happened when she was aged about 42.

There is a road named Rosa Parks Boulevard. She was honored with various degrees and awards.

Many towns have roads and I would expect schools named after Rosa Parks. I know there is a major road in downtown Nashville, Tennessee. And there is one in Detroit.

Many filipinos do domestic work as maids and also heard latinos in america. It is not becuas they are unenducted as a whole. It is because if they apply for higher jobs many employers are prejudiced and wont take them, they will pick someone who is not foreign over someone who to them is the same. Even if they have the correct qualifications.

That is reality, im afraid. Not much you can do about that.

Rosa got her high school diploma at age 20. Back then they had black schools seperate from white ones. And the black children never got the same opportunities as the white children, all the taxes were spent on the white folk and none went to the blacks. They didnt even have glass in their windows. Or heating. The white folk had heating but the black children had to chop their own firewood.

If i lived in those times I would have run for the hills. Rosas family was one of the few black folk that actually owned some land.

She was slightly better off than most but not much. White folk in that town still treated her like a slave. And the black folk had to pretend to be happy otherwise theyd lose their jobs.:-(

That is reality, im afraid. Not much you can do about that.

I work with many filipinos...and we are all registered nurses (highly skilled). In fact, I think my unit has more filipino nurses and staff (unit secretary) than any other ethnic group. Same goes for latinos...if you are educated, race is not an issue in getting a job and often being bilingual gives a person an edge in this multi-cultural society.

I think the black folk endured a lot of violence and hatred by the white folk down in the south. Until finally enough was enough, and laws got changed. But really its the hearts of the people that ought to change not necessarily the laws, although those laws were draconian. Segregation was deemd unconstitional in 1954 i think.

It was hard getting enough blacks registered to vote because the white folk deliberately made it hard for them to register. But the white folk up north helped the blacks their rights and freedom.

One of my nursing instructors was a black woman who got her nursing diploma and master's degree in nursing in the sixties. She was from a humble background and worked her butt off to create her own opportunities. I am sure she faced some hardships but not all black people lived in shacks. Yes, there were some "barefoot poor" black people during this time...as well as white people too... Yes, it was difficult for poor black people prior to the Civil Rights movement but not all black people lived like you mention. I know many very educated black women who are a generation older than I am so would have been educated during the 60's.

Support work and nursing is actually domestic work. Maids and cleaning is domestic.

Anyway with Rosa her mother was a school teacher and the blacks were not paid equal to the whites. White folk who taught and operated schools for black children were often ostracised by the white community.

The blacks of course did not have enough land or cash to really operste their own schools and even buses, everyone had to carpool or walk during the bus boycott, as most of the drivers were white on the bus routes and wouldnt employ black drivers.

The naacp appealed to the bus company to employ black drivers on black bus routes, over sixty six percent of riders were black and also not many could afford cars.

But they didnt they refused every request the Naacp made.

The bus boycott was meant to be only for Monday, one day, but it got extended to 381 days! Think all that time people not riding the bus to work. In the cold and rain! Their shoes wore out.

Talk about protestant work ethic. There you go. Also all the churches supported this and thats how many black folk knew about the boycott because the ministers all talked about it in church.

Anyway just want to sum up what a great lady and glad she didnt give in to be bullied and everyone stood with her.

Racism still exists today in the hearts and minds of people but at least america now has laws that protect folk from the worst of it.

She died in 2005.
If she was still alive now maybe i would have written to her. I think what she tried to do with the libraries was admirable.

Theres still a lot of racism with city councillors etc and of course there were heaps of slurs against my ancestors in the old days. To be treated like a second class citizen on first sight is just not on.
