  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Those who denounce Paul

F

from scratch

Guest
jesus, luke, peter, barnabas, James, a jewish prophet named silas, tim, titus, pricila and aquilla, cornelius, all witness paul..

lets not forget, 3 times in Acts Jesus appears to paul encouraging him to keep going, and no correction to his message either...in 18, 22, 23.
Who by name is he going to claim as witnesses against Paul?

At any rate, we're in big trouble (those of us who don't denounce Paul) if we have no case for any particular doctrine outside of Paul's writings.

After all, we follow Jesus, not Paul (even Paul will tell you that).

1 Corinthians 4:16 (KJV) Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.

A wee bit out of context considering it follows this:

"But I, brothers, could not address you as spiritual people, but as people of the flesh, as infants in Christ. I fed you with milk, not solid food, for you were not ready for it. And even now you are not yet ready, for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way? For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” are you not being merely human?"

"What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building."

Wee out of context would be your posting that shows out of context excerpts from 1 Corinthians chapter 3.
Whereas my scripture excerpt was from chapter 4. (In full)

And excerpt:
13 Being defamed, we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring of all things unto this day.
14 I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.
15 For though ye have ten thousand instructers in Christ, yet have ye not many fathers: for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.
16 Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.
17 For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every church.
18 Now some are puffed up, as though I would not come to you.
19 But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will, and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power.
20 For the kingdom of God is not in word, but in power.
21 What will ye? shall I come unto you with a rod, or in love, and in the spirit of meekness?

Well, I don't want to quote the whole book. :)

In chapter 11 he repeats the idea: "Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ."

Quite frankly, any Christian should be able to say that...unless they are preaching what they are not practicing.

I'd rather tell people to imitate Messiah - not me (unless I'm claiming to be perfect).

Matthew 23:12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

Did Jesus say to imitate Paul?
No. Those who follow Jesus know they are to emulate the teachings of Jesus.
Paul never knew Jesus in the flesh therefore it would be impossible for him to imitate Christ.

Why would it be impossible for St. Paul to imitate His Lord? If what you say is true, then quite frankly we are all doomed, and Christianity (Christian means Christ-like) ceased to exist nearly 2000 years ago, when the last disciple that sat at the foot of Christ, was called to his Lord.

he applied all to himself also, showing humilty?

1 cor 4:6 I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers,[a] that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another.

Did he not say that even if he preaches a different gospel, he should even be cursed?

gal 1:8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.

Did he call himself a servant?

2 Cor 4:5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.

Were you whipped for the Lord?

Gal 6:17 From now on let no one cause me trouble, for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus.

WOULD TO GOD MORE WERE IMITATORS OF PAUL!

This does not follow. You never knew Jesus in the flesh and yet you try to imitate Him. Paul taught what Jesus taught and encouraged others to imitate him as he imitated Jesus. Nothing wrong with that.

BTW- Paul did know Jesus in the flesh since Jesus appeared to Paul on the road to Damascus and Jesus is still in His glorified flesh, fully human and fully divine.

I accept Luke as a second-hand witness. However, the Scriptural requirement demands at least two or three first hand witnesses.

Finally, we do not have multiple corroborating first-hand witnesses to many of Paul's unique doctrines.

dude, how embarressing, like Paul did not see Jesus preach, everyone knew about Jesus! when over 5000 gather out in the wilderness, that takes popularity....

why oh why, do you think paul did not ever watch the Lord?

he did not know Jesus in his humanity? Wha?

16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no more.
