Is outrage that non-Orthodox (let alone not-even members of my denomination which has broken ties with 7 Old Calendarist groups, none of whom was as Orthodox as we are) should be able to post on this subject?!! Would this happen in 19th Century Russia? I think not! Is outrage!

I want to find the humour of it, but you guys have lost me (note my 'cross' icon). I'm just finding it funny because you think it's funny, but I still don't know why you find it funny. Makes sense?

Is there some sort of PR campaign going on the make 'Orthodoxy' 'fun'? You know, the way computer geeks are really cool dudes. ;)

I guess you can call theoniondome.com an inside joke to us Orthodox. It just simply points out the funnier aspects of Orthodoxy, which to the non-orthodox might seem a bit wierd and unfunny. But to me, that website is a total riot and has been the source of several very hard laughing spells. :p

But you are aware of how the 'other' churches view 'Orthodoxy' right? I dare not say it here!

I for one am very aware. The Baptist seminary in my town only sends "missionaries" to Orthodox countries.

You make perfect sense! As Michael has already rightly pointed out, "The Onion Dome" is a bit of an "inside" thing for Orthodox. Ya see, we tend to take things rather seriously, often a bit TOO seriously, so this levity at our own expense is rather refreshing.Self depricating humor is good for the soul. :)

Orthodox are bad at PR. Heck, I didn't even know the Orthodox Church existed until I was in my late twenties. :D

Speaking of that, I just caught the tail end of another Project Gideon promo on 'The Good News Network' a couple hours ago.

Is Outrage !

Let us pray the 'Missionaries' find the true Light while in the mission fields.

andry,

make sure you peruse the Ark-Hive There is bound to be a article or two that would peak Protestant interest and familiarity. Most of the articles do have a lot of inside jokes though. Just like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, while funny to Americans, was even funnier to Greek-Americans that caught the inside jokes that flew right by us.

Orthodox Publisher Releases Novel About Second Coming
April 23, 2004
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA — Responding to the popularity of the blockbuster Left Behind series, St. John of Patmos Press has released an endtimes novel. The novel, titled Enduring to the End, begins in Rome in AD 63. After a dizzying number of anti-Christs, the book reaches its climax with Darby LaHaye Scofield, a 21st-century televangelist who sells his soul to Satan and tries to take over the world.

...

Exciting conclusion here

Is Outrage!!! Was it fancy definite articles in 19th century Russia? No it was not!

We needed to return to language spoken by Christ: 19th Century Russian! Anything else is outrage!

I know at least one that has. One of my best friends went to Romania in college to do mission work (before I even set foot in an Orthodox Church for the first time) and he's now a catachumen.

Duh....like wha??? If you know what these jokes were, I want to know them....I thought that movie was HYSTERICAL....my daughter is 9 and she acts out "Aunt Nicki" perfectly!!!

I also loved the older, very slim lady with black hair...what her name is??? :)P) The one who told that awful story at the party about absorbing her twin....she reminded me of my father's sister....that movie really got to me because my Irish family is JUST like them! Change the Greek accents to Irish brogues and you have my family...

Sorry, but I would be beaten sensless by Yia Yia's should I reveal hidden Hellenic secrets ;)

Seriously, I don't know any, not being Greek-American, or Greek anything for that matter, I just heard that from some in our mission that are.

An Antiochian Priest who served in a Greek parish before coming to America said that the jokes in the movie MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING were not translated as funny as they really were. The Greeks got the last laugh! There is just something about idiomatic expressions which just cannot be translated unless you really know the culture and language.

In the scene where they are introducing the fiance to all the family, almost everyone's name is some variant of "Nicholas." That's funny in itself, but when you watch the credits, notice the large percentage of Greek actors credited whose names are some variant of "Constantine." They are definitely making fun of themselves. We joke about this in my church too, becuase the prayer list goes something like: "Ivan, Tatiana, Ivan, Vladimir, Ludmilla, Ivan, Vladimir, Tatiana, Ivan, Alexi, Vladimir, Ludmilla, Ivan...."
