Let's see if I can do better with a light thread today

For the benefit of those who are new or perhaps visiting for the first time, for a lighthearted look at Orthodox Christianity and our little quirks, check out:

The Onion Dome

Being Oblio, I would be remiss if I did not also mention that if you are taken aback by the site, to read The Point

Hey Chris, can you explain the "Is Outrage!" thing to me? Does it have a particular history, or is it just what "old-country" Orthodox say when they see the Onion Dome's stuff?

Edited to say... Never mind--having read a few articles, I get it now.

Is outrage to ask what Is outrage is! In 19th century Russia we did not ask what is outrage is! We KNEW what is outrage is!

Fumingly (sorry, I can't get the emoticons to work),

Sergey might be able to enlighten us.

I am assuming is caricature of Russian exclamation (sorry couldn't resist ;) )

We routinely use 'Is Outrage !' at our mission as a charicature for hyper-traditionalism (usually) seen elsewhere.

BTW - I love Russians/Eastern Europeans and they do far better than I ever could speaking a non-native language. Our priest tells us that like Kennedy and his infamous jelly donut translation in Berlin, we bungle 'Gospodi pomilui' into something far from Lord have Mercy :)

That's the first time I've even seen the Slavonic for Lord have Mercy written down. We used to use it for Vespers and I never knew if I was saying it right. So I understand how you feel

Edit: IS OUTRAGE!!! was it slavonic Lord have mercy in 19th century russia? ummm... Well.... Is still Outrage!!!

You have turned declaratory statement into verb form. Is outrage!

Tsk. Passing judgement on your brother's grammar. Is outrage!

I now know what Erwin needs to add to CF: an 'IS OUTRAGE!' smiley

Is outrage! you ask what is outrage is! I love the Onion Dome. I especially loved the whole Schism of 1054 bit from a few weeks ago, with the Kubaan Missal Crisis of 1063. But my question is, would they do Orthodox Bumper Sticker contest in 19th Century Russia? I think not!

Thanks for the post.

I myself can't figure this out. Does this sound for you as broken English? But we, on the contrary, often omit 'to be', so Vasily Vasilievich, if he real Russian should say "It outrage!".

Aha! You are trying to create American Church Slavonic. IO!

I want to find the humour of it, but you guys have lost me (note my 'cross' icon). I'm just finding it funny because you think it's funny, but I still don't know why you find it funny. Makes sense?

Is there some sort of PR campaign going on the make 'Orthodoxy' 'fun'? You know, the way computer geeks are really cool dudes. ;)
