The Coming of the Holy Spirit

Acts 2:1 When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

5 Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. 6 And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. 7 And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each of us in his own native language? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, 11 both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabians—we hear them telling in our own tongues the mighty works of God.” 12 And all were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13 But others mocking said, “They are filled with new wine.”

Peter's Sermon at Pentecost

14 But Peter, standing with the eleven, lifted up his voice and addressed them: “Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give ear to my words. 15 For these people are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day. 16 But this is what was uttered through the prophet Joel:

17 “‘And in the last days it shall be, God declares,
that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh,
and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
and your young men shall see visions,
and your old men shall dream dreams;
18 even on my male servants and female servants
in those days I will pour out my Spirit, and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will show wonders in the heavens above
and signs on the earth below,
blood, and fire, and vapor of smoke;
20 the sun shall be turned to darkness
and the moon to blood,
before the day of the Lord comes, the great and magnificent day.
21 And it shall come to pass that everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.’

22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. 24 God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it. 25 For David says concerning him,

“‘I saw the Lord always before me,
for he is at my right hand that I may not be shaken;
26 therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced;
my flesh also will dwell in hope.
27 For you will not abandon my soul to Hades,
or let your Holy One see corruption.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life;
you will make me full of gladness with your presence.’

29 “Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30 Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants on his throne, 31 he foresaw and spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh see corruption. 32 This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. 33 Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. 34 For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says,

“‘The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at my right hand,
35 until I make your enemies your footstool.’

36 Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified.”

37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” 40 And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” 41 So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.

Come down, O Love divine

Come down, O Love divine;
Seek Thou this soul of mine,
And visit it with Thine own ardor glowing;
O Comforter, draw near;
Within my heart appear,
And kindle it, Thy holy flame bestowing.

O let it freely burn,
Till worldly passions turn
To dust and ashes in its heat consuming;
And let Thy glorious light
Shine ever on my sight,
And clothe me round, the while my path illuming.

Let holy charity
Mine outward vesture be
And lowliness become mine inward clothing -
True lowliness of heart,
Which takes the humbler part,
And o'er its own shortcomings weeps with loathing.

And so the yearning strong,
With which the soul will long,
Shall far outpass the pow'r of human telling;
No soul can guess His grace
Till it become the place
Wherein the Holy Spirit makes His dwelling.

Bianco de Siena, c. 1350-1434

"Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord!"

1. Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord!
Be all Thy graces now out poured
On each believer's mind and heart;
Thy fervent love to them impart.
Lord, by the brightness of Thy light,
Thou in the faith dost men unite
Of every land and every tongue;
This to Thy praise, O Lord, our God, be sung.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

2. Thou holy Light, Guide Divine,
Oh, cause the Word of Life to shine!
Teach us to know our God aright
And call Him Father with delight.
From every error keep us free;
Let none but Christ our Master be
That we in living faith abide,
In Him, our Lord, with all our might confide.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

3. Thou holy Fire, Comfort true,
Grant us the will Thy work to do
And in Thy service to abide;
Let trials turn us not aside.
Lord, by Thy power prepare each heart
And to our weakness strength impart
That bravely here we may contend,
Through life and death to Thee, our Lord, ascend.
Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

Shavuot

One of the holiest days of the Jewish year is also one of the least known. What is Shavuot really all about?

by Rabbi Shraga Simmons It is ironic that Shavuot is such a little-known holiday. Because in fact, Shavuot commemorates the single most important event in Jewish history -- the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai.

Shavuot is the culmination of the seven-week-long "counting of the Omer" that occurs following Passover. The very name "Shavuot" means "weeks," in recognition of the weeks of anticipation leading up to the Sinai experience. (Since Shavuot occurs 50 days after the first day of Passover, it is sometimes known as "Pentecost," a Greek word meaning "the holiday of 50 days.")

This Sunday: The Feast of Pentecost
The Coming of the Holy Spirit

Thanks for this most fascinating thread bro! :thumbsup::pray:

I am also reminded of this rather awsome event in Genesis 15:

Genesis 15:17And the sun is becoming set and twilight became and behold! an oven of smoke and a torch of fire which passed between the severed-ones, these.
18 In that day YHWH cut with Abram a Covenant to say of 'to thy seed I give this land from river of Egypt as far as the river, the great river Euphrates

Acts 2:1 And in to the to be together-filled the day of the Pentecost were all likewise upon the same. 2 And became suddenly out of the Heaven a blare, as-even of carrying of forcible blast, and it fills the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And were seen to them as dividing tongues as if of fire and is seated upon one each of them.

The Collect Prayer for Pentecost

O God, on this day You once taught the hearts of Your faithful people by sending them the light of Your Holy Spirit. Grant us in our day by the same Spirit to have a right understanding in all things and evermore to rejoice in His holy consolation; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The first fruits of a sheaf or "omer" of barley was required by the Torah to be presented before the LORD in the House of God, as a thanksgiving "wave offering." (Lev. 23:10,11)

The wave sheave offering you speak of was seven weeks before Penecost.
It represents Christ, the first of the first fruits.

The repentance and baptizing of 3000 persons (Acts 2:41): The bottom line of any Evangelization is the Holy Spirit, the person most important in our lives right now, as stated in 1Pet.1:2: God the Father already created us, God the Son already redeemed us, and God the Holy Spirit is the person who is now helping us to appropriate the merits of the redemption of Christ for the glory of the Father, for the good of his Church, and for our own good…
… We are right now living in the Era of the Holy Spirit… we can not acknowledge God as Abba-Father unless moved by the Spirit, and without the Holy Spirit no one can even say "Jesus is the Lord" (1Cor.12:3, Rom.8:15).

The Spirit has the attributes of God :

eternal, having neither beginning nor end (Hebrews 9:14),
omni-potent, having all power (Luke 1:35);
omni-present, being everywhere at the same time (Psalm 139:7); and
omni-scient, understanding all matters ( 1 Corinthians 2:10,11).

While we celebrate the "early rain" of the descending of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles. Should we also look forward to the "latter rain"?

Deuteronomy 11:14
That I will give you the rain of your land in his due season, the first rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil.

Proverbs 16:15
In the light of the king's countenance is life; and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain.

Jeremiah 5:24
Neither say they in their heart, Let us now fear the LORD our God, that giveth rain, both the former and the latter, in his season: he reserveth unto us the appointed weeks of the harvest.

Hosea 6:3
Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the LORD: his going forth is prepared as the morning; and he shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

Joel 2:23
Be glad then, ye children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God: for he hath given you the former rain moderately, and he will cause to come down for you the rain, the former rain, and the latter rain in the first month.

Zechariah 10:1
Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field.

James 5:7
Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain.

Romans 13:12 The Night progresses, the yet Day has-neared/hggiken <1448> (5758).
We should be putting off then the works of the Darkness, we should be putting on the implements of the Light.

Interesting that it is offered at the first day of the week of weeks and at the last day..

Not so. They are two totally differnet offerings, representing two totally different things.

The “Wave Sheaf” is the first of the first fruits like Jesus is. The wave sheaf is cut at the very end of the weekly Sabbath. The wave sheaf was then brought to the court of the temple, there it was winnowed, parched and bruised in a mortar. Then some incense was added. (a lot of symbolism there) Then in the morning it was waved, by the High Priest, toward the four directions of the compass. Then some of it was thrown into the fire at the alter. The rest was reserved for the Priest. This foreshadowed Christ presenting Himself before the Father to be accepted as the perfect sacrifice for all mankind.
Jesus, like the Wave Sheaf, was recovered at sunset on the Sabbath. The next morning As Mary Magdalene was standing by His empty tomb, Jesus appeared. He called her name and then, as she apparently went to take hold of him, and He said to her, "Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God'"(John 20:17).
But later the same day, as she and the other Mary "went to tell His disciples, behold, Jesus met them saying, 'Rejoice!' And they came and held Him by the feet and worshiped Him" (Matthew 28:9).
But on that Sunday morning a significant event did occur. It was on that day that Jesus ascended to the Father to be accepted formally as the first to be raised from the dead in God's spiritual harvest of humanity. In doing so He opened the way for all of us to have the opportunity for eternal life.

On Penecost the offering was two loves which were leavened.
This represents the people who are in the first resurrection.

It is not what is offered that is the issue... both are called "first fruits" is my point..

It began with the harvesting of the barley during Passover and ended with the harvesting of the wheat at Shavuot. Shavuot was thus the concluding festival of the grain harvest, just as the eighth day of Sukkot (Tabernacles) was the concluding festival of the fruit harvest. During the existence of the Temple in Jerusalem, an offering of two loaves of bread from the wheat harvest was made on Shavuot.

The point is; that the wave sheave offering is for Christ the first of the first fruits and the second one is for the rest of the first fruits; us.
Notice the second one has leaven in it. Leven is used to represent sin.
We all have sinned. Christ never did.
Like I said two totally different offerings for two totally different things.

There's something really pointed about the fact that Pentecost (50th day of the Easter Season) derives from Shavuot (feast of weeks):

1. The one commemorates the sending of the Law, the other the sending of the Holy Spirit.

2. The one celebrates the first fruits of the Earth, the other the first fruits of the Spirit.

God's Plan is subtle, isn't it?

I just wonder why Chirstian will celebrate this Jewish holiday?

They don't celebrate the other six feast of the L-RD Passover, First Fruits, or unleavened bread, nor Yom Teruah, Yom Kippur or Sukkot

So why do you celebrate the one in the middle? Shavuot?

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the L-RD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts.
