I'm restricted from posting links but there's a story on foxnews.com and cnn.com about an 18 year old girl on her senior trip to Aruba who came up missing last week. They detained two men this morning and found a bloody mattress at some point. They're testing the mattress now to see if the blood is hers.

I have nothing but sympathy for this girl. Whatever happened (and we do not yet know) blaming the victim is not appropriate.

Even if she were talking to strangers that is not something a reasonable person should assume would lead to your death (assume she is dead). I talk to strangers all the time. Sometimes they become friends :).

MOD HAT ON

OK guys, the personal attacks need to stop. Respond to posts, not the people per NCE Rule C-3.

Additional problems may be met with warnings.

Harpuia, I'm deeply saddened, and angered, by your post. If my 18 year old son said something like that, I'd advise him to do some serious self evaluation through a lot of prayer and Bible study. I don't believe that your response is a good sign of where you are spiritually. Again, this is not an attack, just a voiced concern for you.

Oh well. I come off harsh, but I'm also blunt and tell it like it is. The deal is this, I've had experiences in my life where I was the victim of people like her. It was her fault that she decided to go on the trip in the first place and her fault that she wanted to talk to strangers (provided this is true).

Of course, I want to know the whole story, but from the moment it looks like, she wasn't using common sense. It's not blaming the victim, it's knowing common sense. And apparently, common sense isn't people's first priority these days.

It's her "fault that she went on the trip to start with"? Are you suggesting that anyone who doesn't stay holed up in their house deserves whatever they get when they go out into the world? That's just not practical, my friend.

And if you've experienced anything like this, I'm truly sorry for you and will pray for you. You need to know, though, that just because you were living your life doesn't mean you are at fault if you were victimized. Not at all. We should be allowed to go on vacation without being kidnapped.

As for being with strangers, the men who she left with are not suspects at this time, nor have any of them been detained. The two men who were detained were not among the three who supposedly gave her a ride to her hotel.

I meant that to me it just doesn't seem a smart thing to do when you're young, a woman and in a country/island far away from home to go off alone and/or hang out with strangers.

Tourists are easy targets, especially young women.

I'll just put this in a way that you cannot understand.

Were I in her position, my friends, family, and country wouldn't be so urgent into finding me.

Just because the girl is pretty and popular all of a sudden she becomes high-priority when she goes missing? I wonder what would happen if the girl wasn't pretty or popular? Trust me, FOXNews and CNN would just do one short story on her and that would've been it. fin.

EDIT: And Blackbear, it WAS my fault. I was the reason why I went through the horrible high school life that I did. I wasn't entirely to blame, like she isn't entirely to blame (personally, if she's dead, we should hang those two fellas), but she still holds blame.

I have to agree. She sounds like a ditz and I really don't care what her absent minded actions got her into.

Maybe it's just me, but Holloway seems to be a continuing story of rich hot white girls going missing.

There's a 5-year old Hispanic girl in Vegas who's been missing since September. Where's her missing photos? Where's her picture being posted on AMW? Thought so.

First, look at Elizabeth Smart. Glad it ended well, but it only made national news because of her appearance.

Chandra Levy, same reason. She was a pretty white girl, and when her crazy affair with some congressman went mainstream news, what did it take to overshadow this story?

9/11. That's right.

It took the death of 3,000 truly innocent lives to overshadow a tabloid story of an affair.

I wonder, does it have to take Iran firing an EMP missile at Los Angeles (like Hal Lindsey's predicting will happen) in order for this story to finally die down?

I feel bad for her and her family.

But I can't help but think how angry I would be if my kid went on a class trip and was able to be away from everyone long enough to disappear. I realize that kids are crafty when they wanna be, but this wasn't a bunch of kids who decided to go on vacation together. They were supposed to be chaperoned. There were "many" adults who were supposed to be responsible for these kids so they wouldn't be in a position to be tempted to use bad judgement.

I can believe someone is to blame for a situation, that they got themselves into this mess, and still have sympathy for them. Isn't this what "love your neighbor" is all about?

Could. But my position still stands. I feel bad for her parents, not for her.
