  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That's a completely different context than the age referenced in Matthew 24 and the ages that Jesus contrasted in Luke 20:34-36. In that verse an age is referring to chronological generations and not to the end of time like Matthew 24:3 and Luke 20:34-36.

i don’t know what your counter argument is trying to say.

How is Paul’s belief in the end of the ages having arrived different than Jesus’ end of the age?

Why not?

"In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know."

"Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I. And now I have told you before it come to pass, that, when it is come to pass, ye might believe."
This was said a couple of days after the questions were asked at the mount of the Olives. Even then, Jesus only said he was going away. The Jews were promised a Messiah that would restore their kingdom and this Messiah was to be their king forever. They never expected the Messiah to leave once he arrived.

The following verses will show that the disciples had no concept of a "second coming" when they asked Jesus when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age (Matthew 24:3).

On the next day, when the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, they took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord, indeed, the King of Israel!” Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written: “Do not fear, daughter of Zion; behold, your King is coming, seated on a donkey’s colt.” These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written of Him, and that they had done these things for Him. (John 12:12-16)

Now He was saying this to indicate what kind of death He was going to die. The crowd then answered Him, We have heard from the Law that the Christ is to remain forever; and how is it that You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?” So Jesus said to them, “For a little while longer the Light is among you. Walk while you have the Light, so that darkness will not overtake you; also, the one who walks in the darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the Light, believe in the Light, so that you may become sons of Light.” (John 12:33-36)

Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered, “Where I am going, you cannot follow Me now; but you will follow later.” Peter *said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You right now? I will lay down my life for You.” Jesus replied, “Will you lay down your life for Me? Truly, truly I say to you, a rooster will not crow until you deny Me three times. (John 13:36-38)

Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going; how do we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me. (John 14:5-6)

But now I am going to Him who sent Me; and none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ But because I have said these things to you, grief has filled your heart. But I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I am leaving; for if I do not leave, the Helper will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. And He, when He comes, will convict the world regarding sin, and righteousness, and judgment: regarding sin, because they do not believe in Me; and regarding righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you no longer are going to see Me; and regarding judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them at the present time. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
(John 16:5-13)

His disciples said to one another, “What is this that He is telling us, ‘A little while, and you are not going to see Me; and again a little while, and you will see Me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” So they were saying, “What is this that He says, ‘A little while’? We do not know what He is talking about.” Jesus knew that they wanted to question Him, and He said to them, “Are you deliberating together about this, that I said, ‘A little while, and you are not going to see Me, and again a little while, and you will see Me’? Truly, truly I say to you that you will weep and mourn, but the world will rejoice; you will grieve, but your grief will be turned into joy! Whenever a woman is in labor she has pain, because her hour has come; but when she gives birth to the child, she no longer remembers the anguish because of the joy that a child has been born into the world. Therefore you too have grief now; but I will see you again, and your heart will rejoice, and no one is going to take your joy away from you. (John 16:17-22)

So the other disciple who had first come to the tomb also entered then, and he saw and believed. For they did not yet understand the Scripture, that He must rise from the dead. (John 20:8-9)

“As for you, let these words sink into your ears: for the Son of Man is going to be handed over to men.” But they did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they would not comprehend it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this statement. (Luke 9:44-45)

Now He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all the things that have been written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be ridiculed, and abused, and spit upon, and after they have flogged Him, they will kill Him; and on the third day He will rise.” The disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said. (Luke 18:31-34)

For He was teaching His disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is to be handed over to men, and they will kill Him; and when He has been killed, He will rise three days later.” But they did not understand this statement, and they were afraid to ask Him. (Mark 9:31-32)

The verses we would quote back to you are about his Return.
They are two different subjects - but to disprove the Return you quote verses about his death and resurrection? That's like me saying there's no such thing as democracy in Australia - and then quoting Pauline Hanson ranting about covid restrictions. (She's like an Alt-Right minority party.)

I know what the verses I quoted are about. If the disciples didn't comprehend Jesus' death, burial, and Resurrection, how could they possibly understand a second coming; especially when the scriptures taught that once their Messiah arrived he would restore their kingdom and be their king forever?

They didn't at the time.
But our point is by the end of the writing of the New Testament - they did!
They understood that he came, died, rose, and reigns now from heaven.
He's with us now via the Holy Spirit - and reigning in his kingdom which WILL never end!

Jesus reigns now.

Jesus reign in the NT might be a bit alien and different to how we imagine it. We imagine rulers that conjure up images of kings and military victories. But we worship a king who died on a cross. So what does his reign look like, and is he already reigning?

Ephesians 1: "That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way."

So Jesus reigns now and in the future age, and the church is his kingdom.

Or try Colossians 2:9 "For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority" He’s the head over every authority - right now - giving the church fullness.

Acts 2:29 “Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, “‘The Lord said to my Lord: “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.”’ ****“Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.

Jesus sits on DAVID’S THRONE - from the Father’s right hand - which means what they thought of as “David’s throne” is in heaven.

1 Peter 2:9 ”But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy." The church is God’s people living God’s way as priests and a holy nation. He rules us now, even as we also serve our masters and governments with godly living. (See rest of 1 Peter)

Even Revelation itself shows us this duality of Jesus reigning in the "now but not yet" phase of kingdom rule through the church.

Revelation 5: “And they sang a new song, saying: “You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth.”

He rules now - through us as his representative kingdom of priests - priests who bring God to man.

The rest of Revelation shows the Lord’s return on Judgement Day in a number of passages from a number of angles - so Revelation is definitely reminding us of the gospel promise that God’s kingdom will be MORE than this one day. But for now? The message to God’s people is hang in there - continue being his Kingdom and Priests because the world needs you!

The Amil reading of 'the millennium' in Chapter 20 of Revelation is true to how the rest of the New Testament pictures Jesus reign. It’s also true to how the whole bible uses 1000 symbolically when it refers to theological concepts like God’s faithfulness and his relationship to history. Jesus reigns now, from heaven, but is also not yet returned to judge this world and bring the New Heavens and New Earth. But we must be patient with faithful endurance in the meantime. Are you serious? So, you think it's a good idea to put your trust in the commentary of commentators that you disagree with. Okay.
That’s not an answer. That’s a deflection.

I referenced Matthew 24:27 where He spoke about "the coming of the Son of Man". Why should we think that is a different coming of the Son of man than is referenced later in Matthew 24 and in Matthew 25? I believe only doctrinal bias can lead someone to come to that conclusion.
Are these two separate events?

For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be.
— Matthew 24:27

And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.
— Matthew 24:30

I agree with this 100%; however; they didn't know these things when they asked Jesus in Matthew 24:3 "when will these things happen, and what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?"

When they ask "what will be the sign of Your coming," they wouldn't have been be referring to the second coming because they were expecting Jesus to set up His Kingdom and reign as king at his first coming. They had no understanding of Him leaving earth and returning at some point in the future.

What I posted was before the OD.

You are getting the knowledge of the Second Coming confused with the Atonement of the Cross.

You do realize that understanding the Second Coming was not the issue?

The church took hundreds of years to settle what the Cross was all about. Those verses in your post is about their understanding of the Cross itself. Most of the books of the NT attempt to clear up all that misunderstanding. And yet it was still debated for hundreds of years later. The Second Coming not so much.

No, it was after. Jesus went with His disciples to the Mount of Olives and gave what is known as the Olivet Discourse before the Last Supper. What you quoted was said after the Last Supper.

I have no idea what a “chronological generation” is. Do you mean a group of people living at the same time? That’s just called a generation.
Yes, I'm specifying what type of "genea" I'm talking about. A generation (Greek: genea) can also refer to an age, a type of people or a race or nation of people. You've been told this several times now in this thread and you're still not getting that the word has more than one definition? This is a waste of my time. Let me know when you're ready to at least acknowledge that the word "genea" has more than one meaning and then maybe we can continue the discussion.

Which meaning is in view in Mathew 24:34?

What I have to wonder, what sense should we take 'sign' in Matthew 24:30 to mean? Could it be like such? One is waiting at a busstop for their bus, then finally see a sign of it several blocks away.

As to what you asked, of course they are not 2 seperate events. The same way there was only one coming involving the first advent, it only stands to reason that there is only one coming involving the 2nd advent, and that God is easily more than capable of mufti-tasking, so to speak. Surely He can do multiple different things at the same time.

And while it's on my mind, you have mentioned clouds are judgment language. I don't necessarily have a problem with that. It's not like when Jesus returns in the end of this age, that that won't be involving judgment. You act as if, per your interpretation, judgment is only relevant to 70 AD and not relevant to the end of this age as well.

Matthew 24:30 indicates He comes in great glory. Explain why He would need to come in great glory if He isn't even physically visible at the time? Why would He need to do that in 70 AD, come in great glory in order to slaughter unbelieving Jews? Come on, surely you can't see that making good sense.

Judgement brings Him glory. This nation killed their Messiah. You don’t do that and get away with it.

i don’t know what your counter argument is trying to say.

How is Paul’s belief in the end of the ages having arrived different than Jesus’ end of the age?
I've already gone over this. Jesus talked about two ages. This age and the age to come. He differentiated between the two here:

Luke 20:34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children, since they are children of the resurrection.

This age, which is marked by people getting married and dying, will end when the resurrection of the dead occurs. At that point the age to come will be ushered in and people will no longer get married or die. So, the end of the age that Jesus talked about has clearly not yet come.

What Paul was talking about in 1 Cor 10:11 is that the last age of a number of ages in history had come. He did not have just two ages in mind (this age and the age to come) like Jesus did. I see it as Paul indicating that the last age or last days of history had already begun at that point, as other scripture talks about as well. Of course, the last days have continued while people are being saved (Acts 2:16-21) and they last up until the future return of Christ (2 Peter 3:3-4).

But, keep in mind that we're talking about something that Jesus talked about in the Olivet Discourse. So, I believe it makes sense to first look at what else Jesus said about the end of the age and to see what He said about this age and the age to come to help understand the timing of the end of the age and to help understand what He was talking about in the Olivet Discourse as it relates to the end of the age. What He said about the end of the age and about this age and the age to come elsewhere (besides the OD) does not support the belief that the end of the age occurred in 70 AD.

If you think the end of the age already came in 70 AD then tell me how the following was fulfilled in 70 AD:

Matthew 13:47 “Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48 When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49 This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50 and throw them into the blazing furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The above reminds me of Matthew 25:31-46 because it speaks of angels separating all people into two groups to be judged. Do you think Matthew 25:31-46 is already fulfilled?

Are these two separate events?

For just as the lightning comes from the east and flashes even to the west, so will the coming of the Son of Man be.
— Matthew 24:27

And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory.
— Matthew 24:30
No.

Are these two separate events?

Matthew 24:27 For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

Matthew 24:37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

Are these two separate events?

Matthew 24:27 For as lightning that comes from the east is visible even in the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man.

Matthew 25:31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32 All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left.

Which meaning is in view in Mathew 24:34?
Why are you asking me this? I've already given my understanding of that verse multiple times in this thread. The meaning there is that this type of people, which He called sinful, wicked and adulterous, would not pass away until all the things He talked about were fulfilled.

Others would say He was using the definition of the word as referring to a race of people which would mean He was saying this Jewish race would not pass away until those things He had talked about were fulfilled. I find that to be a plausible interpretation as well even though that's not my interpretation. I bring that up just to show that the word clearly has more than one definition, so that has to be taken into account.

Once again, it doesn't matter what their understanding was at the time. Jesus answered the question according to HIS understanding of things, not theirs. That is what matters. He did the same thing in Acts 1:6-8 as well.

You can look it up. The temple is gone.
No, really? I thought it was still there. Come on. Obviously, Jesus talked about more than just the destruction of the temple and you know that.
