I need to chime in here to correct an error (y'all know how I am)...

As for communion, the Lutheran Confessions make it very clear that no one is to administer the sacraments unless he be regularly called, that being the one who is called and ordained by God through the Church. This is based on the Biblical teaching of the Office of the Keys.
The exception being baptism in the case of an emergency when any baptized Christian can baptize.

Ok... back to your regularly scheduled "kitchen talk." :)

Well, perhaps you should explain that to the many many many pastors who are receiving their communion from their elders.

I'll pass this on to my husband and see what he has to say about it.

And none of my children were emergency baptisms, either.

The explanation is that the elder communes the pastor by the pastor's authority, but the elder has not the authority to commune the laity. It's a practice that I'm not all that comfortable with myself, but...

PW,

The answer you get from your husband will most likely counter DaRev. I expect none other.

BTW... In my fieldwork church, the elder only distributes the individual cups and I come behind him with the Common cup for those who didn't take from the elder's tray. I say "Take and Drink, the blood of Christ shed for your sins." When I am through the Pastor then dismisses the communicants and welcomes the next ones to the table of the Lord.

I am not ordained yet (2 school years and a vicarage year to go.) but part of my training is in helping with communion. I get my authority from the Pastor.

Our LCMS pastor receives communion from an elder (for now) but once the Associate Pastor joins us, he'll be doing that part.

Yes, you have an elder assisting you as you are giving communion. I see that a lot in the WELS churches that are large in membership and either have one pastor, or one pastor is on vacation. In my old church, the principal of the school was called upon frequently to serve in that capacity, although he did actually say the words depending on whether he had the bread or the wine.

In our church, if my husband is unable to distribute communion, it would be either the retired pastor (if he is attending) or an elder. Since our congregation is small, we only have two elders. One particular Sunday, neither of those elders were present, so one of the ushers administered it, using the same words that Christ used. He had to read them off a card, but they were the same words, they had the same power than as if my husband had said them.

Again, that's a testimony to the power of the WORDS, not the person saying the words.

Odd...it seems that with you not being ordained yet, DaRev might have a problem with you distributing communion, based on what I've read thus far.

I've been WELS for a long time, and haven't seen anyone but an ordained minister do communion. I've never heard of an elder, or for that matter, an usher saying the Words of Institution in any WELS church I've ever attended. I've seen elders assist, but that's it.

our Pastor recieves communion from an elder, there is no one else...

our communion sounds similar to other stated here -- our Pastor does the words of institution in front of the church, then "tables" are led forward -- Pastor distributed the bread then an elder carries the tray of individual cups (for those who wish to take it) and Pastor follows with common cup and the words (we hold our individual cup until Pastor comes by us with the word) we are then dismissed as a table and it starts again with the next group

Mind you I do not say the words of institution or as some call it the Verba.

"On the night in which he was betrayed, Jesus took the break and when he had given thanks he broke it and gave it to his disciples. . ."

These words are only spoken by the Pastor.

Welcome back Rev, hope you had a great time.

Yes. I saw my son and my brand new grandson in Colorado, my oldest son and grandson in St. Louis, and met some wonderful people in Texas. ;) Also traveled through some of the prettiest country.

This is exactly how I do it here.

As they should be since he is the only one who has the authority of Christ to speak His words of institution.

Shoo! Shoo! Out of the kitchen with all this religious talk! Go start your own discussion thread. *laughs*

And please don't scare away Hunter once I finally got him here. He's had me pulling out Christian Dogmatics all evening.

*makes a nice hot pot of Darjeeling*

Who wants a cup?
