I'm having all kinds of problems with this forum tonight. I think it has to do with the updates that installed on my computer yesterday. I allowed it to do so and it updated Internet Explorer to 8.0. It doesn't seem to be completely compatible with this forum. Sigh, why does Microsoft hate me so much?

Well, I finally got in contact with my Uncle Will. I find it hard to believe that the man is eighty or so years old. It just doesn't seem possible. Then again... my Mother would be Eighty-Eight this year if she was still with us.

I find it so strange to hear that my Cousin, his son, my very successful Cousin who seemed to have the world by the tail and all the rewards possible... is divorced, living in a (as he describes it) tiny apartment on the coast and self employed. Oh how the great have fallen.

My Uncle, Mr positive thinking himself, is complaining that old age sucks and life is really miserable. So much for positive thinking. I feel bad for them and really would like to comfort them both. Yet what can I say to them? They've never listened to me before, why would they now? Then again, they're not so elevated above me anymore either. Perhaps, just perhaps the Lord is opening a door for me there. Then again... maybe not. I wouldn't know. I just hate to see them so unhappy. What to do... what to do...

Yeah, I've had Firefox all the while. I was sticking with what I knew rather than what appears to be a superior browser. So, now that I.E. has imploded here I am getting used to Firefox.

Yeah, I was afraid prayer was the only venue available for my Uncle's family. They're Church of Religious Science, ie: unbelievers. Agnostics at best. They don't believe the Bible is anything more than a collection of fables. Refusing therefore to believe in that 'collection of men's writings' they instead adhere to other men's writings. Go figure.
:sigh: Whenever Uncle Will and I even came close to discussing religion he would, condescendingly, with a superior air, inform me that I was well indoctrinated into my religion. As if I was a mindless boob who had been brainwashed. The Rosicrucians did a good job destroying any faith he ever possessed. So very sad.:sigh:

Many years before she died, my mother joined that empty tomb, doubtless drawn in by my uncle. She found that the people involved practiced absolutely nothing they preached and became bitter about it. When I went to church, she would question me about the week's lesson and was fascinated by my struggle against the emptiness and perversion that had entered the ELCA. She watched as I transferred to the LC MS and would question me closely what I had learnt there. A year or two before she died, I started questioning her about what she believed and we had some really detailed conversations about it. I became convinced that she at least held to a minimum faith in the Lord. Uncle Will (her brother) and his family however... I'm convinced they don't. So, I have an assurance that I'll see dear old Mum again. However Uncle Will, Sue, Eric, Julie and their children are likely all lost. So very sad.

Sorry about the rain fest.:sorry: I just needed to vent. I do hope you all have a great day.:)

Happy Independence Day! We did our celebrating yesterday. It was a lovely day at the lake. Grilled chicken and other goodies. Missed my kids - it's hard to live away from them, especially when you watch other families being together. But we are blessed to have friends to spend the day with.

Drove over to eastern Iowa to my daughter's yesterday. BBQ chicken, hotdogs brats and hamburgers. Today, we all participated in either an 8K or a 5K. I so need to get back to regular walking. I finished in about 1 hour 10-15 minutes. Waiting for them to post the times online to know for sure.

I'll have to confess that July 4th is my least favorite holiday, not because of what it celebrates but because of the way it is celebrated.

I like the way it is celebrated just fine. But I really hate the heat, so I rarely take part in any festivities. When I lived in the mountains where it was a little cooler, I would go to the early morning pancake breakfast in the town park (little town of 500) and stick around for the parade that was at 10 am. A couple of years I was on our church's float in the parade. There were various activities throughout the day. One year, we entered our geese in the kids' pet show. We would then go home for dinner and come back for fireworks at 10. It was all very "small town America". I loved it, though even in the mountains, it was hotter than I would have liked.

This year, my daughter is camping with friends and my husband and I are going to stay inside where it is cool and watch fireworks from our balcony at 10 pm. We are lucky to live right next to where our city's big fireworks display is held.

We had a few different traditional 4th of July things we did, some I liked and some I didn't.

note: none of them involve going to parades as the only parade in my town occurred around the time of the fair which was in August.

When I was little I would wake up, take the full page US flag that was printed in the newspaper and put it on the wall in my room. I did this every year and there were quite a few on my wall. Then we either stayed home or went to my grandparents house and had a barbecue which mostly involved me running around and playing with a cardboard fan and a squirt bottle that my dad used while barbecuing. I also played with poppits … a lot, I loved those things. Finally once it got dark we all sat around in the grass and watched fireworks that were set off by my dad, grandfather or uncle.

Then during my teenage years our church started having a 4th of July picnic all day. I really didn't like these much. I would take a book and my walkman and hid somewhere far away and tried to avoid everyone. This did not work, however as the youth pastor would invariably show up and tell me to come play water balloon volleyball or some other stupid game like that. After a bit of that I would go hide in our car. Now remember this was Eastern Washington, on the 4th of July. It was always over 100 degrees and I was sitting in a closed car. It was pretty unpleasant, but when you are being chased by a rabid youth group, you do what you have to. We had KFC, every year. Usually we had it at the big park with the swimming pool downtown, but I can't swim so that didn't mean much to me. One year however we had it at a smaller park which luckily was not to far from our house, so I was able to walk home when I got really board. That was by far the best year. The picnic went on forever but then when the sun went down we would sit in our yard and dad would light the fireworks from our driveway and often our neighbors would come watch them with us. One year one of the fireworks landed on the roof of our car even though dad had parked it way back in the corner of our yard. We thought it was pretty cool but my sister thought it was horrid. The next year we were sitting there in the yard and I said "remember last year when the firework landed on the car? That was cool!" and my sister said "No, that was SCARY!" and then a few minutes later a firework fell over and started shooting at my sister and she had to jump into the bushes to get away. I don't think my sister liked 4th of July all that much after that.

All in all I like the 4th of July, the fireworks are fun and I like family barbecues … on the other hand I hate the heat and church picnics. Still it works out to being more fun than annoying for me.

I'll have to confess that July 4th is my least favorite holiday, not because of what it celebrates but because of the way it is celebrated.

I'm uncomfortable usually with how the church often tries to tie it in. All of a sudden songs that are really entirely about America become acceptable church songs just because God is mentioned in them a few times.

Church closed with the tune of "America -God shed his grace on thee." I didn't say anything but it feels like the lyrics are issuing a command to God.

Other then that I don't have a problem with how the 4th is celibrated.
