That's a great book idea. Given that I work for a non-profit I know how hard it is, especially when people would rather put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads. You've got to be very inventive these days.
My dad's side is all around here but my mom's is all over (IL, SD, Ontario).
My mom's family meets a couple times a year in Lafayette since it's 3 hours from Chicago and Dayton. It's a pretty good medium for most of us. Now that 3 of my cousins are in the military and one has a contract job, they are all over the world (Hawaii, Afghanistan, and South Korea). The closest one is in the Old Guard, stationed in DC.
I hate legalism.
A person who is a recent convert and asked a question about how to observe the Sabbath at work. He was going to tell his employer (hospital) that he couldn't work on Saturdays because he was a Christian. Then, after some progress, someone comes in and lays the "law" down on how to properly observe the Sabbath and now he thinks he is sinning if he is not observing the Sabbath the way they said.
I'm not sure where this is, perhaps Romans or Corinthians, but it goes something like this; "we are not saved by sabaths, holy days, or festivals of the moon, we are saved by faith, and that in Jesus Christ." I'm sure I have it wrong. Perhaps someone can correct me here? All the same, I find using that one will work for the new Christian who is enamoured with the Law.
Is your friend an SDA? If so, you have no hope in this argument. They are enslaved with the Law and refuse to listen to what Scripture says about that. If he is Lutheran, then I would suggest discussing with his source that what they are telling him is Heterodox. In fact, I would suggest having the Pastor speak to both parties. You just might have a wolf in your sheepfold.
Luther, I love the Lincoln quote. What is the context of it, wherever did you find it? It often amazes me that Academia insists that so many of our Presidents weren't Christians. Yet, if one studies their collected works, that's exposed as a lie. Then again, where is that a surprise?
I used spaghetti sauce on my dog once. That is all I had in the house. It worked. He loved it, and thought it a real treat.
