  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I considered bringing milk down to the theoretical basement as well, for my chosen beverage.. but if I had to choose I'd probably choose orange juice (since that's what we have) or ordinary water. Seems like it wouldn't spoil as fast.

Oh wait.. I forgot I brewed a cup of tea.

Canned, low acid foods will actually last decades. So, veggies, some fruit juices, milk, even meat if its canned in a tin can, can last 5, 10, or even 15 years with little loss of nutrition or visual degradation. Back in the 1970's, they found some corn that had been canned in the 1930's. They tested it. There was no spoilage, bacterial growth, it had retained its color and texture, and retained more than 96% of its nutritional content.

Seriously, though. The wealthy are buying bunkers. They are stocking up on provisions. They are invested in tradable goods, gold, and silver. The value of the dollar is dropping. And people are losing more and more of their rights every day. The smart money is on being prepared.

I agree, but come on.... its duck and cover!

If there was ANY evidence that one should never trust their government..... its that method in itself.

It sucks the oxygen from the area, incinerates everything in its path, or blows it to bits by its sheer force, then it brings a wave from the opposite direction as it all rushes back..... THEN there is fall out.

"Dont worry kids... just cover your face and head...... you'll be fiiiiiiiine." :|

Sadly, people didn't question government til.. what... about 20 years AFTER duck and cover?. :|

I understand that the civilians didnt have all the info.. but come on.... if it were that simple...... the Japanese wouldn't have thrown up the white flag.

I hate canned food. I would say that most of it doesn't "degrade" because it's questionable how good or real it was to start with:)

My grandfather and his brothers bought several hundred acres of land in the mountains of east Tennessee. Their first task was to build a nuclear fallout shelter. Its still there and is still owned by us. They started building it just after it was revealed that Russia had nukes.

I agree!!! Maggie Smith is a wonderful actress. I cannot wait until the next season. Sadly, it is the last one.

Then do like I do. Can it yourself. There is home canning equipment which uses tin cans instead of glass jars. We have been canning for decades. And tin can do prevent spoilage. They are air and water tight. The three bacteria needs to grow is moisture, light, and oxygen. Tin cans remove two of the three.

Eastern Tennessee would be a good spot for such a shelter. I used to live in Eastern Kentucky and always thought if the world went down the tube I'd retreat to the mountains somewhere and live a much simpler life for as long as the Lord allowed.

That's good that you do that. I'm mostly kidding. Obviously if I was starving I would eat canned food. Except for canned ravioli...I'd rather run out of the bunker and get blown up before eating that :p

Id have one if I had the means, just cause.

Although, Id live in it. My luck Id have it and if anything DID happen it would go down while I was asleep. :|

Have a fully prepped shelter..... only to die above it.
Just build a home that is built into the ground, or partially in the ground.

My family has never been rich. But, we come from people who had the technical knowledge to build anything. My great-grandfather owned his own construction company. My grandfather worked for him when he was young. That knowledge has been passed down. My mother was a civil engineer. Im a mechanical engineer. My brother is a plumber. My uncle was an electrician. My cousins are masons.

Thats weird, I always thought that it would go down like Red Dawn (The first one) when I was a kid. I didnt see nukes being used, more like an invasion.

Too many resources in this nation to just nuke it, youd want those resources.

Another reason that living in a mountainous region can be to your advantage.

There is enough water flowing through the mountains that you wouldn't have to live "the simple life". You can buy pelton turbines on ebay for less that $50. You can turn a ceiling fan, a clothes washer, pretty much any electric motor into a generator. A few deep cycle batteries and some basic equipment would be all you would need. In case of a nuke, or CME, build a faraday cage to protect your electronics.

Yep, but alas I live in the flat lands of Tx.

On the bright side.... if the end of the world situation is zombies...... you can see them 40 miles out.

And this being TX theres no shortage of guns or those willing to pull the trigger.

Why bother with a bomb shelter in the first place? You're going to die anyway, and it makes more sense to save yourself another five to fifteen years grueling subsistence living if you embraced the end.
