  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

There is enough water flowing through the mountains that you wouldn't have to live "the simple life". You can buy pelton turbines on ebay for less that $50. You can turn a ceiling fan, a clothes washer, pretty much any electric motor into a generator. A few deep cycle batteries and some basic equipment would be all you would need. In case of a nuke, or CME, build a faraday cage to protect your electronics.
I know nothing about most of that stuff. Thanks for the information.

Yep, but alas I live in the flat lands of Tx.

On the bright side.... if the end of the world situation is zombies...... you can see them 40 miles out.

And this being TX theres no shortage of guns or those willing to pull the trigger.

That uncle of mine who married the girl 40+ years younger than him...you wouldn't believe the number and types of firearms he has. Texas has a reputation of showing firearms. We have a reputation of hiding them. I know for instance, that he has 3 crates of M1 rifles, still packed in cosmoline.

Why bother with a bomb shelter in the first place? You're going to die anyway, and it makes more sense to save yourself another five to fifteen years grueling subsistence living if you embraced the end.
Because, Im not dead til Im dead.

God didn't make me so I could simply give up.

If you could see inside our bunker, you wouldn't think that. Personally, walking into something I believe I can survive, but decide it would be too hard to live, would be tantamount to suicide.

This is a good point.

But zombies take the easiest route. In the flatlands of Texas, they can surround you. They would be "funneled" in the valleys of the mountains and much easier to pick off.

Wouldn't you want to live a real-life Fallout game?

Actually, most people that own them don't really show them.

Some do, but its not as back woods and redneck as we get credit for. Where ole Cleetus has a shot gun hanging in his truck and eveyone is named Cleetus. ^_^

Honestly, having been all over..... Texas is like anywhere else..... just without seasons (most of it anyway) and generally more laid back (except in traffic).

And subsistence living with rogue marauders guarding their cache of food is living?

Read Josephus' account of the destruction of Jerusalem.

Who said anything about subsistence living? As for rogue marauders, unless they are trained combat veterans, they would be much of a problem.

That would also limit your escape routes. Also, youd have snow to contend with and the lack of food/animals that comes with it.

Here, its all flat, pick a direction and go..... don't worry about changing seasons.... just survive the heat.

Besides that, this part of Texas..... if you wanna chance the ocean and no zombies..... the gulf of mexico is right there.

Well, of course, if I come to the bunker, you're going to share, right??

I can see that I would need to make plans and weigh the pros and cons of each situation before the zombie apocalypse. I am more familiar with the mountains than I am with the flat land but I can see the flat lands of TX would also have its advantages.

Augustine of Hippo or Augustine of Canterbury?

It still seems short sighted.

You do realize that 90% of the US population lives within 100 miles of the coast? During a EOTWAWKI event (End Of The World As We Know It), the population is suddenly going to migrate. They will stay in place until the resources in the area are depleted. Just look at what happened during Katrina. Some people left, but many decided to stay and wait for the govt to come to their rescue.

And most people are lazy. They will pick an area clean before they decide to move. By that time, most of the population will be dead. And unless they find food while migrating from the coast to the inlands, the survivors will be too weak to mount an all out assault.
