The word "woke" is misused

Both of those are entertainment programs, not news programs. Tucker Carlson outright admitted to lying on his Fox program and defended himself by claiming it was "just entertainment" and that people should have known better.
Entertainment and news. Like TYT, and all the others lie. It's the human condition. At least he admits it. But here is some context to his "confession". Tucker Carlson admits he lies on show: ‘I really try not to... [but] I certainly do’

My rule of thumb when looking for a source to trust: Perfection is the enemy of excellence. It has served me well. I'm rarely surprised when stories reach their inevitable fruition. It is because of the reliability of my sources.

Honestly, “woke” is one of those terms that I know, when I hear it, I can think up my grocery list, mentally balance my bank accounts, see if I still remember the Romeo and Juliet balcony scene I had to memorize in high school, or otherwise check out. It lets me know a right-leaning sound bite/buzz word soaked, but not especially well researched, rant is incoming and there is no reasoning or logically discussing the topic further. I can “TL;DR, congrats on your success or sorry that happened, whatever the case may be” a response and find something else to do.

It’s like hearing the terms “snowflake,” “sleepy Joe” or any Brandon reference, “illegals,” “stop the steal,” “cancel culture,” any descriptor added to the word “agenda,” or superfluous letters added to LGBTQA+ acronyms. I can safely tune out without worrying I’m missing anything vital to the conversation, with the possible exception of having to apologize to somebody named Brandon who’s wondering why I mentally wandered off during the discussion.

They're all dog whistles. :tearsofjoy:

Same way with "patriarchy," "misogynist," all the "-phobias," "colonizer," and "Narcissist."

The right hijacked the term as a pejorative to attack anything they deem leftist.

Why would that term be viewed as an attack on the group of people described? If anything, it sounds like an attack on anyone other than the group of people described. Because it seems to be saying "everyone lost grip of reality except for those people we are referring to" (that is "everyone is sleeping except for them").

Why would it be a right-leaning person speaking rather than left-leaning? Logically, referring to a leftist as "woke" is the same as saying people on the right are asleep. So, logically, it would be something a left-leaning person would say. Why did it happen to be the other way around?

Patriarchy is one that I tend to glaze over on too, but it doesn’t come up a lot in my circles. Same with “colonizer.” I hear that more by people who think that’s something “liberals” (used as an insult) say, but it’s not something I hear with any regularity. Narcissist is also overused, but I think that’s because people don’t really understand what it means.

The “phobia” one is a YMMV thing, I guess. I don’t hear “phobia” in any real context where it’s misapplied.

The same way common usage dictates the accepted or understood meaning of words. Kind of like how people know “get out of town” means “are you joking?!” and not “gather your items and leave the zip code posthaste.”

In a language where “flammable” and “inflammable” mean the same thing, how accepted slang evolves is the smallest of linguistic mysteries.

A favorite I find myself using more and more is "misandrist". I've come across a LOT of those, especially in HR departments.

Misandrist is a core component of Radical Feminism. And that's not a secret...their seminal documents say so explicitly.

Because why bother having a conversation when you can just say "that person has the woke mind virus". If the goal is to earn points, rather than making cogent arguments, then anything goes--there are no rules besides "I win".

That's why we don't have political conversations anymore, we have whatever this all has been the past decade.

But the linguistic structure of the word woke is exact opposite. Whoever "woke" is right because the one who is woke is the one who sees, and the one who is asleep is the one who doesn't see.

So, in order to win conversation as you described, one has to say "I am woke" instead of "you are woke".

I can't tell if you're playing word games or if you genuinely don't understand how words can be co-opted, or their meanings changed, when used by different persons in different contexts.

When someone says "That's pretty cool" do you believe they are describing the literal temperature of something?

I agree, yet you hardly ever see that word, and most people have no idea what it means. Interesting... ;)

I'll have to point out that "woke" was a self-description.

Most people don't know what "fascism" actually is, although you see that word all the time.

The comical part is that the word for that is not "woke". It's "awake". i.e. "John is asleep but Judy is awake." That's part of the comedy of the word being used originally as a self description. :tearsofjoy: It's source is, for all practical purposes, Ebonics slang.
