The "TULIP" needs to be changed!

I'm a 5-point Calvinist, but I dislike the TULIP acronym. I think 4 of the 5 letters are very misleading. Please check out this article regarding the problems with "TULIP": http://www.biblelighthouse.com/sovereignty/nomoretulip.htm

I much prefer this formulation of the 5 points:

E - Exhaustive Depravity
L - Lord-centered Election
E - Effectual Atonement
C - Conquering Grace
T - Triumphant Saints

Here is some more detail: http://www.biblelighthouse.com/sovereignty/elect.htm

Let me know your thoughts . . .

In Christ,
Joseph M. Gleason

I like that! Here are a few other ideas:

In The Doctrines of Grace, James Boice and Philip Ryken have chose to go with:

Radical Depravity
Unconditional Election
Particular Redemption
Efficacious Grace
Persevering Grace

R.C. Sproul in Chosen By God choose to use:

Radical Corruption
Sovereign Election
Limited Atonement
Effectual Grace
Preservation of the Saints

In his book Putting Amazing Back Into Grace Michael Horton goes with a Message-like adaptation of the terms:
Rebels Without A Cause
Grace Before Time
Mission Accomplished
Intoxicating Grace
No Lost Causes

W - Witness what great things He has done - Psalm 19, Rom. 1
O - Omniscience of God to know all about us - 2 Tim. 2:19
O – Only saved by grace through faith - Eph. 2:8
P – Persevered by the love of God in Christ - Phil. 1:6
S – So we can bicker over theology - Eph. 4:2, Phil. 2:3, Col. 3:12

Fallen Humanity
Adopted by God
Intentional Atonement
Transformed by the Holy Spirit
Held by God

:D And finally one that is a bit of a dig on Arminians. They do have a sense of humor, right?

Arminians Select Floral Motif

Tired of being without a floral motif vis-a-vis the Calvinists, the Arminians have just completed a summit in Possum Waller, Arkansas to select an appropriate symbol. Chairman Dave Hunt ruled that the Daisy faction had won over the Jack-in-a-Pulpit partisans late this afternoon in the second round of voting. The proposed acrostic looks as follows:

D- Diminished Depravity
A- Abrogated Election
I- Impersonal Atonement
S- Sedentary Grace
Y- Yieldable Justification

Pastor Eli Coots of the Backwoods Bible Institute made the announcement, "Gone are the days of acronmyical imbalance. Now we too have an easy to remember acrostic that all may freely use to oversimplify and misunderstand our system of belief! Let holy-rollers, faith healers, fundamentalists, Left Behind groupies and KJV Onlies of all stripes unite in celebrating this blessed event!" He later added that the acronym came with a bonus--the poetic symmetry between the uncertainty of one's own salvation that Arminians enjoy each day, and the petal-plucking ritual of the daisy--"he loves me, he loves me not..."

Coffee, ya beat me to that one! As soon as I saw the OP I thought of Sproul's book. He also in the Q&A chapter alluded to using Definite Atonement and further maiming the acrostic:)

I do agree that the TULIP acrostic can be misleading and is easily (and often) misinterpreted. But I suspect you'll have that no matter what terms you choose :)

I learned with TULIP and think it should stay as the TULIP. There is enough spineless conformity and change in the church today. A sense of stability should be found in God during this time of shifting sands. The gospel hasn't changed. People are still born in sin. God still elects those He chooses for His reasons. Only a Universalist or one who doesn't want to think about it too hard will say that Jesus died for the sins of every person in the world. Only one with an abundance of pride will claim that they have to sign off on the plans of a sovereign God. Only one who wants a surface-level Christianity will think they can deny God the right to maintain salvation.

The TULIP should remain, but some of these other terms could be used to teach it in ways that are easier to understand. Total Depravity has recently come under question in these forums (answered wonderfully, by the way). Limited Atonement is oft-misunderstood. And the other three are just debated by those who want to claim some of the credit.

I like it! But, being a Republican, I don't like change so TULIP it is.

I have a 5 point acrostic for the Arminian , and it is em , a floral one!

We can regenerate ourselves at our will .
Everyone is Elect.
Every human can activate the atonement.
Depending on our choice we can say no to God , everyday!
Salvation can be lost , then found , then lost , then found , then lost .......

(please note I couldn't find any scriptures to help you with this )
