You seem to misunderstand the difference between the actual laptop and hard drives and the data. The lawyers are complaining about the unlawful dissemination of private data which the Mac guy had no rights to.

The data came form the HD in the laptop, which was subsequently handed over to the FBI.

No. Why don't you explain it to me? Why can't I read spam emails on my computer, that I never read, from a decade ago, without logging into my email account. I'm looking for them; but I can't find them on my HD. Can you point to which path I should enter to find them?
It's called Outlook. They are saved on the hard drive as .psts. FYI, I've been in professional IT for 25 years and my IT certifications date back to MCSE NT 4.0. While I missed the punch card era, I've been working on computers since 1977 when I started on DECwriters.

Here you go. Mind you this is just an example. Most modern e-mail clients use some form of this unless it is a SAAS solution. Even a lot of those will allow third party clients to connect. There are no shortage of user here who have a lot of experience in IT. If you are going to make claims in this area it would behoove you to ensure they are correct.
