• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

    If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

    If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Ty for the reply sir. Oh so you think the alcohol should go first? I guess that you must be right, I'll try it that way. I think I am addicted because I dont have anyone I care about, I wish I had but then that's upto God I guess. I feel bad, I wonder what I would tell Allan if I pulled out now Maybe I should continue fighting cigs for the sake of our mutual support partnership. I really have to think about this hmmm. To successfully kick the habit of drinking takes about 12 months sir? Ooooh I didnt know it was gonna be that hard a fight!

Allan: Well sir yesterday I actually ended up smoking a couple of cigarettes more than the day before. But on the whole, I am down by nearly 50%.Yes, I didnt think it would be this hard, it's almost driving me crazy hehe. Indeed, Nov 1 seems to be rushing towards us, and I think I will have to fight harder. You seem to have a lot more will power than me sir! I am experiencing headaches, I am not sure if it's because of the lack of nicotine. You shouldnt give up sir, you are already down to 20 from 25 and that's a lot of progress youknow. I on the other hand, smoked 25 cigarettes today, which is a couple more again from yesterday, so yes, you seem to be kicking the monster's behind while I am not and I am not proud of myself at all. The guy at the local medical store offered to get me some nicotine chewing gums, have to see if those are any help. I think sir, the more you cut down, the more difficult it is going to be to cut further down. So if you dont manage to reduce for a day, dont feel like you have completely failed because you havent. I promise to do better tomorrow, if only to show off to you hehehe.

Hi Matt; Just to let you know that it is not good to stop quitting just because someone say you might just as well. If it takes 10 years to quit because we try everyday that is better then to quit quitting. I am not a religious person but I trust that if we have desire God will help us at His time and speed. Also we should never put God to the test by praying "Oh God remove this curse from me,' or something like that. The reason is if we do not quit we blame God and lose faith when it is faith that will carry us through any problem this world can put to us. Indeed we must pray "God if it is your will (and I know it is) that I can quit these evil ,stinking cig. habit then I ask that you guide me via your Holy Spirit to overcome the desire of satan and his demons to keep me smoking." " In Jesus name we pray Amen.
God bless you Matt and you help me indeed just to be friend and care!

Thank you TMmusicman; Indeed it is time to quit and with Gods help and help from friends such as yourself I have much hope that I and others can do it right here on this thread. It does not matter how long it takes as long as we do not quit quiting. God bless you and thanks again.

Right on crimsonleaf! Thank you for pointing out the tags here. There is no doubt that they are the exact consequence of continuing to puff away with no concern for anyone else on earth except my own feelings of security (false of course) that I think they provide. Your comment is appreciated.
God bless you

Thank You Katautumn; Thank you for sharing and God bless you. Indeed with His help and the help of friends such as yourself we (I) can one day leave these cigs behind and enjoy the fresh air (what is left of it LOL) that God provides. I have been very impressed with the interest shown this thread and can see that the Lord is very interested as well.
God bless you

For the last 8 days I have not smoked until after breakfast and brushed teeth and waited as long as I could before having that first one. This was becoming a very good habit and I could feel progress in quiting.

This morning I got up out of bed and went right outside and lit up. After 2 drags I could feel every nerve ending in my body light up like a light bulb and I could feel myself starting to faint or pass out. I had to drop the smoke and hold on to the patio railing to keep from falling. In 60 years I have never experienced such an awful shock from a cig. For the first time I know just how powerful these things really are and just how sick they really can make us (me). I will never do that again!
I will try to remember this event as a message and a very rude awakening.

Well here we are Matt;
I hope all is well with you and you are keeping up the struggle. It is really a case of when we are willing to put our total effort into quitting just one cig. a day and of course that being the first one. Yesterday I learned that it is the first smoke we have everyday that does the most damage to our health and well being so I have decided to really focus on that one. First of all once we have that first one it really does not matter how many more we have or do not have. We must quit that first killer weed everyday before it kill us.
What do you think?

Allan, I think crimsonleaf is right about not trying to quit a lot of things at once, but I am still with you trying to quit smoking. I smoked a pack of 10 today and havent lit up another one yet. It's night now for me and I actually dont have any ciggies to light up even if I wanted to. Just have some nicotine chewing gums. I chewed through 4 of them already and have 6 left. I dont know why, but I am experiencing a lot of headache. In spite of chewing on the nicotine gum I mean. I didnt go out of the house at all today, so didnt get tempted to buy cigs. But I honestly dont know about tomorrow, I hope to goodness I can abstain or atleast only buy a couple. (Here where I am, we can actually buy cigarettes individually without having to buy a whole pack.)Well I suppose your body must have been hit by some sort of nicotine rush when you smoked that first one right in the morning. Good thing you didnt fall down or anything. Btw are you doing anything else to keep your mind away from smoking?

Matt;
Indeed we should take our addictions 1 at a time. In my case these are coffee, cigs, sugar, and I suppose anything else that looks good, tastes good or feels good, LOL. Just being certain that we do not quit quitting is the correct course for us to follow and it does not really matter when we quit but we will indeed at some point.
Have a great day my friend

Hi Allan,
Well sir, I had a bad day and I ended up smoking about 30 cigs! I dunno, even my relatives/family dont like me unless they want me to do something for them. I've had enough of that. If I call them just so I would have someone to talk to, they just give me the finger. Right now I am glad I atleast have this forum to come to and talk to people. I know it's not really an excuse when we're trying to quit smoking, but having someone to talk and care about would've been so nice. Anyhow I slipped up today and I own up to it. How're you doing sir? Managed to cut down further I bet. Are you getting a bit umm short tempered due to cutting down sir? I'm afraid I am. I suppose the poison's scrambling my brain. Awaiting news from you as to how you are doing, sir.

I had quit for 7 mos. and then started again a few weeks ago. I bought some nicotine gum and the patch and was smoking using them! Then I realized the smoke in my bathroom was coming through the vent and making my bird sick. I quit right away and now am on the nicotine gum. My bird saved my life and visa versa. I have a good reason to quit, so my bird lives. Best of luck to you. You can do it. I'm praying for you.

Hey Matt. Great to hear from you my friend. Yes indeed we can get a little short in temper trying to quit but we are doing it for ourselves as well as friends and family. One day when we are free from cigs. we will be in much better frame of mind and mabey then everyone more happy to see us. I still smoke about 10 per day but time is running out to Nov. 1 so I better start quitting harder LOL.
Try to have some fun with this Matt. It works if we do.

RuthD: Oh you managed to quit for seven months ma'am? And yet you still had the craving? *wonders how long it takes for us to stop having that craving.* See? It's easier to quit when you have someone to care about, maybe I should get a bird too hehe.

Allan: You only smoke 10 a day now? Thats wonderful sir, it really is! I guess you are right in that if I could have some fun while trying this, I would be better off. However I am kinda distant from my family and relatives, no particular friends, and not really into anything at the moment which makes it harder. Well yes, now that we're trying to go 'smokeless', Nov1 seems to be rushing up in a hurry doesnt it?

Good morning Matt;
I have a friend who smokes only 1 cig a day and he has being trying for years to quit that 1 cig. You see Matt that has very little to do with numbers but much to do with desire to be smoke free. No it is not fun to quit or even cut down but we have to believe that when we do we will feel better, look better, smell better and finally have some money in our pocket to do other things in our lives. If we are not smoking we will be forced to get off our rear end and go out into the world to meet friends who we can help personally to quit. I love going to church and be with friends there and I know that if I can quit smoking I will feel better + be able to buy someone a coffee or whatever. If we have smoking friends we do not need to fear losing them. They likely will want to know how we did it!
Have a great day Matt and do not quit quitting.
Your friend Allan

Hi Allan,
You know sir, you always speak so wisely- and indeed I need someone like that hehe. Yes, I do spend a lot of money on cigarettes I dont have friends as such, but I take your point sir. The few guys I know dont smoke, they have families so somehow they managed to quit. I wish I had gone to church often and made friends there, today is Sunday and I was out to buy medicines and I saw a church nearby and almost went in but talked myself out of it! I havent drunk for a few days now and I dont feel much craving for that- guess the cigs are more evil. No sir I wont stop trying to quit. Exactly 10 more days till Nov 1!!! Today I bought a different brand of cigs thinking the change in taste would put me off but it didnt work out too well. I still smoked quite a few. I honestly think I am finding a lot of silly excuses to smoke, gotta kick myself in the butt and stop doing that. Just say a little prayer for me, sir.
