Hi Sethsmommy, I actually have a little brother named seth.. anyways, I dont think the bible really supports that theory, That would mean Jesus didnt need to come and die/rise for us.

However, one of my favorite authors, Erwin Raphael McManus, thinks that the 10 commandments may be Gods minimum standard for all of us! Its not something that we should have as our main goal (being able to obey all 10) it should be the least that we do!! God Bless!!!

In Jewish tradition, the minimum standard for all of us is the covenant God made with Noah. Under that covenant humans are to refrain from idolatry, adultery, murder, profaning God's name, injustice, robbery and mistreatment of animals (specifically cutting meat from an animal while it is still alive "with the blood still in it".)

I know some people belive that if you follow the ten commandments you'll go to heaven..

but everyone lies and one of the commandments is thou shalt not lie am I right...
Hello
It is impossible to live by the law of the 10 commandments.
Have any of us loved God so much that by comparison we hate our family, wife our own self in comparison to our love of God?
Have we EVER told a lie. It doesn't matter how small. It didn't say "you should try not to lie"
Have we ever stolen anything...a piece of gum, a pen off a desk.
People think they are save with this one. "thou shalll not kill" Jesus said that if you hate another you shall be judged the same.
None of us have kept any of the commandments..so if we try to live by them we will perish. It is like a mirror showing us just how lacking we are and how far away from a holy God.

The law is absolute and leaves no room for exceptions. God knew that when He gave them. He was setting us up to recieve the savior with open arms realizing ourselves and our need for Jesus.

Question : Did Christ obey all the commandments?

~peace~
OK, i'll answer my own question. ;)

Of course He did!

(you're probably wondering where i'm going with this....)

Our 'old self' could not, no matter what, adhere to the Laws of God. But, as Christians are we still our 'old self'? "...I have been crucified with Christ; yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me..." Gal. 2:19-20. & "We know that our old self was crucified with him, so that our sinful body might be done away with, that we might no longer be in slavery to sin. For a dead person has been absolved from sin. If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him." Romans 6:6-8

We are now a 'new creation' with Christ living inside of us. Following His every lead. Will He lead us to sin?....ummm...no!

p.s. As far as the ten commandments, we are now under the new covenant...
"He said to him, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it:You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments." Matthew 22:37-40

Maybe we should just look here to what Jesus says (paraphrased cos I dont know exactly where it is in the bible)

'Which is the most important of the commandments?' "Love God and love your neighbour, as long as you do this, all else will follow"
something like that...

The 10 commandments are OT, and Jesus came to either scrap old laws or to reinforce them, he infact made some of them even harder to keep to...(paraphrasing again)'you have heard do not commit adultery, but I tell you do not lust for someone or something that is not yours' - now that is very hard to keep to! You know, someone gets a new car and it's very nice and you would love it - that is lusting for something that is not yours! Difficult eh? But he then says 'love God and love your neighbour', let us follow that and we shall never go wrong - as long as we love God and we love our neighbour then we are doing as God wants us to do...

(appologies for any mis-quoted verses)

All,

How delightful! Have been discussing the Sabbath (really christians being required to keep the 10) with SDA folks over in general Theology.

Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."

Hi trucker, first off, i'm SDA so let me put things in proper perspective.
I believe that Jesus died for my sins and He did everything possible to save us. We didn't have to do anything. IOW, i'm just sitting down here typing away knowing that God had done something that i couldn't do. He saved the world and that if i believe and accept it, i will be saved.

Now with this knowledge, i know that i am saved and so i'm extremely grateful! So the next question is "what do i do??" or "what is the proper response?" or "what do you want me to do Lord?". Of course i know i'm already saved, but i just want to do something that is pleasing to God in this life and i want to make sure it is. So the guidelines that i see are in the 10 commandments which of course includes the Sabbath commandment.

I see it often that if couples are so in love with each other, they would do anything to make the other happy. This would include asking "i know you love me already and i'm grateful for you BUT what can i do to make you happy?i really want to behave in a proper way and to please you"

Jesus represented human race in saving us. And i am certain that he wouldn't leave us without any guidelines in ways we could express ourselves such that it would be pleasing to Him. The 10 commandments are essentially the guidelines in this world to please Him. They DO NOT replace the sacrifice of Jesus nor do they provide salvation to us. It is just a proper response!

Lastly, christians would agree that the whole salvation message is wrapped up in one word "Love".

"Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. " Matt 22:37-40

I would propose a hierarchy of commandments if you will.
At the top level you have LOVE.
The second level you have love to God, and love to neighbor. In verse 40 it goes on to say "On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets."
So the third level would be the 10 commandments. 1st 4 commandments describes our response to God. Last 6 describes our response to our neighbor.
Is there a 4th level? Yes. When Jesus came, he demonstrated what the 4th level was. He came to earth to demonstrate the SPIRIT of the law. Note that the 3rd level (10 commandments) is the LETTER of the law. And the religious leaders of that day were just keeping the LETTER without the SPIRIT. So one purpose Jesus came was to re-introduce the SPIRIT into the law and to teach them the proper way of true obedience. So the 4th level would be like "You murder too if you have angry thoughts against your brother". IOW, it gets more specific as you go down the levels. But yet, the top level is LOVE. That's why i say, LOVE is enough. But do not forget how many things would be hanging on that word LOVE.

If i am truly grateful for Jesus' death for me on the cross, i would bother to ask "what do you want me to do Lord? You did everything and i just want to live a pleasing life wholly and acceptable to you". Jesus answers "If ye love me, keep my commandments." John 14:15. John goes on to say "For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous."1 John 5:3

I've been an SDA all my life and his commandments provide freedom (James 1:25) and satisfaction to my life because i know it is pleasing to Him. There is nothing more i can do than to obey because i know Jesus saved me already.

Hope you get a better picture of SDAs. Of course some demonstrate in such a way that the 10 commandments are SOO necessary as if they are necessary for salvation but it's not what we believe.

The 10 Commandments were given to the Israelites and were part of the Old Covenant . .but they were based on the moral and spiritual laws built into God's creation . . and as such, are still a valid experession of that moral and spiritual law . .

But Christ gave us a fuller expression of that moral and spiritual law . .

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

AND

Thou shalt love thy Neighbor as thyself!

These 2 Commandments go much father than the 10 Commandments for they incorporate the Golden Rule, not just the Silver Rule . .

The 10 Commandments tell us what we are not to do morally . .

The Silver Rule of Ethics tells us

"Do not do to others what you do not want them to do to you" . . .

So the 10 Commandments tell us what not to do .. the same things we would not want others to do to us . . it is stated in the negative and is a minimum standard to live by . .that is, till Christ.

But when Christ came, He went farther than the Sliver Rule . . He takes us to the Golden Rule Do unto others what you would have them do to you . . Love thy neighbor as thyself.

He takes us from a negative expression of God's moral law underlying God's creation, to the positive expression of it . . LOVE

So the 10 Commandments do remain a very valid, though limited, expression of God's moral law . . and so they are of importance to us today as basic guildes in the realm of the Silver Rule of Ethics . .

But they are transcended by the 2 Commandments given us by Jesus, just as the Silver Rule is transcended by the Golden Rule.

Peace in Him!

Seems according to scripture it the 10 commandments and the testimony of Jesus which leads us to salvation.

ISAIAH 8 [16] Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.[17] And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.[18] Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.[19] And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits, and unto wizards that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? for the living to the dead?[20] To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.[21] And they shall pass through it, hardly bestead and hungry: and it shall come to pass, that when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse their king and their God, and look upward.[22] And they shall look unto the earth; and behold trouble and darkness, dimness of anguish; and they shall be driven to darkness.

Bind up the testimony and seal the law and wait on the Lord. To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Didn’t Jesus say that he was the light of the world?

PSALM 78 [1] Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.[2] I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:[3] Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.[4] We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.[5] For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:[6] That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:[7] That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:[8] And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God.[9] The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle.[10] They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law;

Who opened his mouth in a parable? Yup, Jesus Christ. And this scripture says he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, that they might set their hope in God and KEEP HIS COMMANDMENTS. Just went and read some scriptures about the “day of battle”. It’s the “day” I thought it was. That day could be coming soon.

PSALM 119 [32] I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart.(2COR.6 v.11) [33] Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. [34] Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. [35] Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight. [36] Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness. [37] Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way. [38] Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear. [39] Turn away my reproach which I fear: for thy judgments are good. [40] Behold, I have longed after thy precepts: quicken me in thy righteousness. [41] Let thy mercies come also unto me, O Lord, even thy salvation, according to thy word. [42] So shall I have wherewith to answer him that reproacheth me: for I trust in thy word. [43] And take not the word of truth utterly out of my mouth; for I have hoped in thy judgments. [44] So shall I keep thy law continually for ever and ever. [45] And I will walk at liberty: for I seek thy precepts.

Here again we find it’s the law (commandments) and the testimony (of Jesus) and this leads to SALVATION.

REV.12 [16] And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.[17] And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Nothing new under the Son.

Did you guys know that the 10 Commandments are not commandments at all? They're not imperatives - they're future indicatives. They are expected behavior of the people in covenant with God (like your typical Suzerain-Vassal treaty). It's not "You have to do" or "You must not do." It's, "Because of our covenant agreement in the future you won't do this," or "You will do this."
