Irrelevant to what, exactly?
You cannot expect churches to stand still as society changes. They are "a part of society", not "apart from society". And so an insistence on maintaining a particular stance while the rest of the world moves on means a church becomes ever less relevant to its customers and potential customers.
It's actually the church and the message that needs to adapt, rather than the church having an expectation that society winds back the clock. This is inevitably going to mean a selective approach to the what the Bible says -- and while that might sound shocking at first... actually if we are honest with ourselves we all have that approach, the only difference being in the bits we decide to select or leave.
Select or leave? How much content could you remove and still keep the essence? It might be controversial. A topic for a new thread, I think. Or has this been debated before on here? I don't want to derail this thread so we ought to go elsewhere to talk this one through, assuming people wish to explore more.
