Luke 9:59-62

He said to another man, "Follow me." But he replied, "Lord, first let me go and bury my father."

Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."

Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family."

Jesus replied, "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."

It is interesting when you compare it to the Torah which forbid a newly married man from even serving in the military in time of war.
Im not interested in biblical narratives that deal with parents. This thread is on the quran. Furthermore, islam essentially states that the quran is not Biblically based. This is a Bible-free discussion.

Even though the quran commands people to demonstrate kindness towards their parents and brothers, it also says muslims are not to love their parents and brothers if the latter do not choose islam.
Is that a contradiction in terms and is such a thing even humanly possible?

... This thread is on the quran... This is a Bible-free discussion.

And yet the Bible is mentioned in the thread title with nothing mentioned of the Koran.

My Muslim peers at my Catholic high school didn't seem to have a problem. Source?

Not only do the Muslims I know touch and read the bible, they know where to go and find the dirt when debating.

My philosophy when a Christian:

When the Bible and the Qur’an are in agreement.....no problem.

When they are not in agreement…..the Bible takes precedence.

(When the texts neither agree nor disagree…..the Exalted knows best).

My philosophy as a Muslim:

When the Bible and the Qur’an are in agreement.....no problem.

When they are not in agreement…..the Qur’an takes precedence.

(When the texts neither agree nor disagree…..the Exalted knows best).

And my favourite texts from both: 'Be still, and know that I am God'.............'Remember Me. I will remember you.'

Thank you for the reminder.

.

Thanks. But trust me......I need reminding too.......often!

‘And after the earthquake, fire. But Yahweh was not in the fire. And after the fire, a light murmuring sound. And when Elijah heard this, he covered his face with his cloak and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then a voice came to him, which said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”'

(1 Kings 19: 12-13).

I guess it's all too easy to miss His gentle whisper, when all we do is stuff our ears with din.

And then Elijah was fired. Poor Elijah.

Well, he had a big moment of despair and HaShem decided a new prophet was needed. But Elijah gets a pretty sweet gig, being invited to all Passovers and bris ceremonies. Wouldn't you like to be invited to that many parties?

At my age, I should be so lucky :)

Just to note, since I did bring it up, the general idea I've heard as to why Elijah is invited to such things is due to the section of the Bible you quoted. He despaired and thought that he was the only person left loyal to the Holy One. He was shown then that he was wrong and he is invited now so that he can see that we've continued on from his time up to today.

Personally, I had muslims tell me they were forbidden from looking at a Bible, so they must have been deceiving me again if what you say is so.

I was under the impression he was invited for two reasons. First, he is said to have never died so he can come back. Secondly, because he is supposed to return prior to the coming of the Messiah.
