Hi I was wondering if anyone else feels that re evaluating what they watch on TV seems more important than ever before?
Just wondering as I am questioning a lot of things I do in my life. I have been a Christian for over 30 years but lately have been paying more attention to what I spend my time on.

Australian Television is in a race to the bottom with unreality shows like Married at First Sight interestingly followed by A Night with my Ex. Yet even so my great problem seems to be the number of ads and the number of ad breaks, so that 20 minutes of Television takes an hour to broadcast. I have found my humour greatly improved by watch Netflix. I also tire of morning news programs who think the news to report is what was on TV last night (on this channel) and what will be on TV tonight (on this channel).

Very true about the standard, or lack of I should say . I got Foxtel and have dropped some stations because of content in them. So mostly I tape and bypass ads because as you said a great deal of the programs just have way too many in them. When I find myself watching a show about watching people watch their TV (Gogglebox) I question myself. Much of the news is taken up with tabloid gossip so I'm seriously thinking of giving it up or at the very least, time limiting.
I am drawn more and more to Philippians 4:8 which tells us to think on the things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely etc so I am at Crossroads. I don't want to become isolated from what's going on but then again as a Christian I am to be in the world but not of it.
Anyone with any suggestions??

All I watch are the science channels and Christian TV in my bedroom in the evening after reading my bible. There isn't a show elsewhere on TV fit to be watched by a Christian. And the news is a bunch of biased leaning people to the left or right, nothing neutral with just plain old news. The weather is sensationalized as they explain that you can't survive what ever coming storm without watching them. You can find a lot of older movies on youtube for free or even old tv shows. Most modern TV's have either HDMI or USB hookups on them or like myself I have a large monitor in my living room and no TV there at all. I also have an external sound system that I play my digital keyboard out through, also hooked to the laptop. So the laptop and all available to it is more of an entertainment center than the tv.

For the little bit I watch tv I should just dump it all together.

For sure there are a lot of television shows that the Christian should stay far away from. And we like to rent movies from Netflix. So many nowadays have to for some reason have God's name in vain -- I hate that.

As time has gone on I've found myself dropping more and more shows. The morals in them are becoming mare bankrupt as time goes on. Like I used to watch Games of Thrones, but after a few episodes in I couldn't stomach the fact they use shock for sake of being able to do it. Graphic sex/nudity, major gore, nasty language, incest. Eh.

Doesn't mean I am perfect mind you. I still enjoy the walking dead. Its main issue is just gore, though its mainly zombie gore. I did check out the new series Altered Carbon and Punisher on Netflix. Punisher was violent and I am still mixed on it simply because hes an anti-hero whos just about vengeance. Some anti-heros at least have some redeeming qualities, Punisher just is gritty, angry and violent. Even if its "just bad guys" hes going after.

And Altered Carbon, it was such an amazing idea sort of like Blade Runner. But the nudity is something I was not expecting. Full male winky dinks showing. One woman you seen more than just some artistic shot, it was shaved lady bits. That took me by suprise.

As with most shows when they have to much of something JUST for shock value, I tend to stop watching. I find myself watching less TV/movie and watching more youtube related stuff like funny videos or gamers who have funny dialogue while playing.

I actually don't care for a lot of the newer TV programs for the same reasons the OP states. I don't even have any cable/satellite services at this time (not really missing it) and rely mainly on DVDs and whatever I can find on Youtube, Dailymotion, Yahoo View, and the Internet in general. The few currently-running network programs I do watch (The Middle, America's Got Talent, and a couple others I can basically count on one hand) are available online, but cannot watch the new episodes anywhere from a day to a week after the broadcast, and have to catch them before they "expire". I can also catch the current news online, which I can get from a variety of sources. I mostly like classic TV shows and some educational programming. I've also taken a liking to some of the clean Youtube comedians/entertainers (some of whom are even Christians, which makes me appreciate them more), and a lot of the time, I find them as good, and most of the time better than, the quality of the entertainment of anything I could ever view on TV. Some might disagree, but those are just my views. Between the Internet and DVDs, I can make a mixture of my own choice of programming, and for the most part weed out what I don't desire to view.

Simple as that! :)

Will try to post this once again; it seems many people are having the same issue I am with posts duplicating:
