The second book of Esdras (Apocrypha)

Nomenclature is a problem here. If you look at a Catholic Bible like the Douay Rheims (I believe this is the first Bible translated in to English, 1604) it will list 2 Esdras. But that 2 Esdras is known in other Bibles as Nehemiah. Ezra = Esdras, and 1 &2 Esdras correspond to Ezra and Nehemiah.

Then there is another book called 2 Esdras (that the OP quoted) which in Catholic/Orthodox terms is called 4 Esdras and is considered apocryphal/uninspired.

I'm impressed. Considering this site is overrun with people who don't know the Apocrypha from a hole in the ground, it's cool that you're looking at it.

II Esdras is a theodicy, right? It's an interesting and important book because of its provenance and it gives some light into what Jewish thought was on the end times. Don't bash it simply because it's not in the protestant bible. It has its uses. There are dozens of allusions to apocryphal books in the New Testament, and Jude quotes explicitly the Book of Enoch which is only found in a couple of eastern canons (coptic, I think).

As far as IIEsdras 13.20, notice it is the visionary speaking, not God.

As this is probably going to turn into an ugly rapture thread, I will now abdicate. No one seems willing to give a crap about the bible when it comes to eschatology.

lol...Well i looked into my bible but i think someone has ripped out the book of Esdras coz i can't find it ...

yes, they did, about 200 years ago. it's called "editing"

actually, I think Esdras 4 is in the greek and the ethiopian christian apocraphas, not in the catholic one.....

I have NOT studied that book, however, I believe, if I am correct, someone told me that this one in particulr has alot of overtones similar to the book of Revelation, and in fact, might help one understand the symbolic language that is in common to both....

I know of one man in particular that this is found in his coptic bible and he knows it as well as you or I know REvelation.

Indeed. It's a rather important book, though obviously pseudepigraphal. I've had to study it for various research projects. I wish more people would realise the importance and looking at the world around the literature for interpretive schemes.
