  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

SNAP could be fully funded for as long as the shutdown lasts if the Republican leadership would allow a vote on a standalone bill to do so. There's only one party to blame for that not happening
Yup the ones who continue to vote against opening the government

There have been three attempts to pass bills that would fully fund SNAP during the shutdown so far. Republican leadership has refused a vote on any of them. Democrats can continue to vote against reopening the government indefinitely, but that will not change the fact that Republicans can fully fund SNAP for the duration of the shutdown anytime they want to. It could literally be done by the end of today.

There have been 15 attempts to re-open the government - using a clean Continuing Resolution that continued Biden era financing - the same one the Democrats signed 6 months ago and fully supported.

If they would stop holding people hostage as a bargaining tool - there would be ZERO interruptions.

Republican leadership deliberately chose to allow an interruption in SNAP benefits during the shutdown despite attempts from members of both parties to prevent it from happening. The shutdown itself and the Democrats refusing to pass the CR aren't to blame for people going without SNAP benefits right now. SNAP continued fully funded and without interruption in past shutdowns. It's the Republicans who intentionally caused them to be interrupted during this one and most Americans can see that.

Incorrect - the Democrats voted for the shut down 11 times BEFORE SNAP was effected. If the government had remained open this would not be an issue.

It is a manufactured crisis from the Democrats because they want to strong arm the Republicans into spending 1.5 trillion dollars that the Democrats could not pass in legislation - and most Americans can see that.

Let's review:

The Unaffordable Care Act - Democratic policies - no Republican voted for it.

The Subsidies needed because the Obama Care was too costly without all taxpayers paying for it. Democratic Policy receiving no Republican Support

The subsidies had an expiration date of 2025 set by the Democrats with no Republican support.

Legislation was legally passed through both House of the Congress and signed into Law on July 4, 2025

Democrats close government in an attempt to strong arm the Republicans into funding that would circuvent the legally and democratically passed legislation.

Multiple Democratic Leaders have openly stated they are using the shutdown as leverage.

Incorrect -
And we can stop right there already. No, it's correct. SNAP could be funded easily and this wouldn't be an issue. Some Republicans even are for this. It's just the Republican leadership that doesn't want to do it and the President who won't use the emergency funds already allocated to do it. I know, I understand, you just want to blame Democrats for everything but it doesn't quite work like that.

It's all about providing Americans a means to healthcare for those who can't afford our countries high cost of healthcare. And it's easy to solve. Since the GOP control all branches of government Trump should have them introduce his healthcare plan that is better and cheaper than not only the ACA, but every plan in America. Problem is of all people Margie Greene is saying the quiet part out loud. The part that every American knows. There is no plan. Never has been.

Not sure if that's true, but 30 days of food is better than purposely denying them anything as the Trump admin wants to do.
If Democrats really care about the poor and needy getting food - they could change it today - just reopen the government and everything goes back to normal.

Evidently their political agenda and want to spend 1.5 trillion dollars is more important to them.

No- it is not - the 1.5 trillion is not just for health care - but a wide swath of pet projects that the Big Beautiful Bill brought an end to. And they don't like not being able to change it legislatively.

John Federman is saying the quiet part out loud - it's a disgrace what the Democrats are doing and people are seeing it.

No, it's about healthcare. That thing the BBB is going to decimate by not extending those funds without any replacement or plan what so ever.

Again, where's that Trump plan? Have you seen it?

You can if you want to - but the truth of the matter is the truth of the matter.
There was no truth to the matter after that. Just ignoring that something could be done about it, and there are people in both parties who want to do something about it, but Republican leadership doesn't want to.

I think that we need to focus.

1) During the pandemic, the federal government chose to allocate emergency funds to greatly increase the federal Obama subsidies.
2) The federal contribution to state welfare funds for medical care (MEDICAID) has greatly increased over the years.
3) In the Spring, a law was passed to reduce the Obamacare subsidies and the reduce the future federal contribution to the state cost of Medicaid.
4) Democrats opposed both shifts from federal to state responsibility for funding.

NOW, the Democrats refuse to keep the government running which would have the effect of continuing to fund the government at level previously approved by Congress. We are the only democracy in the world that shuts down the government when the opposition can mount 41% in opposition,
======
OBVIOUSLY, the FEDERAL government should continue to pay their share of SNAP. In the meantime, states can certainly step into the breach. This is a diversion for this week. I don't see the shutdown lasting past this weekend. If Democrats refuse to vote to open the government, the filibuster will be gone and the government will reopen and Democrats will HOPE that in a year the voters will blame the Republicans for not funding SNAP for a few days.
=========
DEMOCRATS WILL CONTINUE TO POUT. However, the majority of voters DO INDEED want the federal government to spend less and will accept the states paying a larger share of social welfare costs.

....while many Americans face rising health care insurance and cutoff food aid benefits, Trump throws a Gatsby style party....complete with a dancer in a Martini glass....

Footage shared online authentically showed a dancer in a giant martini glass performing at U.S. President Donald Trump's 2025 "Great Gatsby"-themed Halloween party at his Mar-a-Lago Club.

Now, the Democrats, are yes, holding out for ACA funding. Funding that Nearly 80% Of Americans And 57% Of MAGA wishes that funding continue as well.

Shutdowns happen all the time, and yes, it is the only tool the minority in congress often uses to force "X" to happen. So to me it comes down to what that "X" is. This time it's to make sure people have healthcare and hospitals that may be the only hospital in rural areas stay open. The time before that was a hold out for money for a wall that Trump said a gazillion times Mexico was going to pay for.

We need to entirely change the rules of the game.

The federal government has chosen to reimburse the states with more and more money. If the feds choose to slow down the rate of INCREASE in federal support for the STATES, somehow it is the federal government who is closing the hospitals. NONSENSE!

Each year, the Congress should decide how much money each state should get each year for public welfare spending. The states should then CHOOSE how to use these funds. Instead, the feds make decisions on exactly how the money spend. But even now, the feds don't really decide how the states spend the money. This system would result in a huge reduction in federal administration costs (and federal jobs) and would probably allow for the unreasonable increase in federal spending percentages to continue, or not.
========
JUST BY THE WAY
This process is called "revenue sharing". The federal government decides first how much to collect for public welfare and then how much to allocate to each of the states. There should be a minimum of admin costs. For some federal programs the admin (overhead) costs are very low (e.g. Social Security). For others, it is very large.
