  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

They should cut the pay of all Senators and Congressional Reps. No pay for the military - no pay for Congress.

The military already is not getting paid, which i don't like, but i agree on the other two. If fact, dems do also and submitted a bill to that effect.

I guess the medical needs of the poor really do not matter to alt-right MAGA Christians.
What's that compassionate saying they have?
Something like "Government funding for anything but the sword is theft?" (Way to misread Romans 13!)
Where a good reading of history shows the church was behind some of the great social reforms, such as the abolition of slavery, universal education, the establishment of hospitals and hospices, old aged pensions, and even composed and private voting booths (voting used to be a drunken, raucous affair here in Australia).

Yay! Let's use warped MAGA politics to UNWIND centuries of progress towards a gracious, caring welfare state!

Wow! Then why was it Schumer and his friends who cast the deciding votes that shut down the government?
Why didn't Trump come up with a deal that would pass?
How could Schumer do that if Trump is "in charge of the entire government"? Is Trump in charge of Schumer too?
Trump could have proposed a deal that would have passed across the aisle. He chose not to.

I'm posting during my breaks at work. I don’t have the time to debate you like I debated my fellow college students back in the 80s.
So...wait until you have time then? You're not adding anything to the discussion by spamming Fox News articles that you haven't even read.

What's to negotiate? The Republicans all voted to keep the government open.
Well, no, they technically didn't. They knew they didn't have the votes to do that and decided not to do anything to gain the required votes. They actively chose not to keep the government open.
I know, it's hard to adult and compromise on things to get some of what you want, but that's how governments work. You gotta adult.

Yes. They don't refute anything I've said, which is why I questioned whether or not you've read them.

So do the Democrats
Yep. And seems to me they were willing to let the Republican's have some of what they wanted if they got some of what they wanted. And they offered to negotiate, but Republicans didn't. So it's not the same thing, even if you want to make it so.

The Republicans are suggesting and extension of what the Democrats supported before Yrump was in office.

The Democrats along with a SEVEN week extension want 1.7 trillion added to spending.

Not sure how that is even close to adulting….

Uh yeah they did. The Democrats voted not to. Thats how it works. The democrats knew the Reblicans werent going to give them 2 trillion dollars. They acted like children saying if you don't give me what I want I'm going home. This is the Drmocrats fault. Plain and simple.

I’ve been watching this with interest. I like the bit where one side wants to shut down the government to sack a load of government workers or cut medical benefits for the most needy and the other doesn’t.

I blame Republicans for the shutdowns under Obama because they asked for concessions, got those concessions, and then still voted "No" on the budget. That would be like if the Republicans today put forward a funding bill that included ACA subsidy extensions and Democrats refused to vote for it. You'd be right to blame the Dems for that.

And Trump explicitly took credit for the 2019 shutdown, so I'm happy to agree with that.

It's amazing to me how many people are willing to harm themselves for the opportunity to inflict what they think will harm someone else more.
I’m not sure why. A significant proportion of Americans will put up with all kinds of deprivations if they can be convinced the ones they don’t like are worse off.

Your question in response to my question indicates you don't have an answer.

Trump could have proposed a deal that would have passed across the aisle. He chose not to.
No reasonable deal would be accepted when those "across the aisle" (Schumer and his friends) are willing to play politics with the paychecks of 750,000 workers.

They would have had the votes if the democrats doing the voting would have voted to pass the bill to keep the government open. But they chose to vote "no", which they knew would deny 750,000 federal workers their paychecks.

Not one Republican voted in a way that favored a shut down. They voted in favor of Biden’s already agreed to guidelines.

It could account for the Democratic Party’s historic low approval rating.

From August Newsweek

The Party has a 24 percent positive rating and a 56 percent negative rating.
