  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

to use a shutdown as a bargaining chip.
a bargaining chip for what? Democrats simply want to make the reconciliation bill passed by Congress null and void.

PREDICTION
The shutdown will last at least a month while departments LEGALLY furlough all non-essential workers. Eventually, the Republicans will "cave in" and give back some of the Medicaid and ACA subsidy cuts, but that's all. And then, many of the non-essential workers will find that their jobs are no longer there for non-essential employees. 100K jobs or more will be gone. And, yes, whole departments will be almost gone.

This process will have a repeat next year when the 2026 reconciliation bill will again reduce government.

And then the people will vote, probably giving Democrats the House. And then, Trump will do everything by Executive Order, much as Biden did, and as Obama did when they lost their majorities in Congress.

Only in the sense that they want to restore the original funding streams whose termination forced the creation of the support fund.

The 50 Billion dollar fund
Yeah, the $50 billion fund that was created to cover the shortfall created by Medicaid cuts in the BBB - estimated at (you guessed it!) $50 billion. If Medicaid cuts were reversed, as Democrats are asking, then that fund would not be needed. Personally, I wouldn't mind keeping it in place - rural hospitals were already struggling, so doubling the amount of funding they get through Medicaid would be a massive boon, but I thought we were trying to be fiscally responsible.

We are being fiscally responsible, that's why we had the military senior leadership travel to Virginia to hear the Secretary of War and the President of the United States speak. A zoom meeting would have cost way too much.

They want to claw back the funding for rural hospitals:

Wow. FEMA funding? Trump wants disaster relief returned to the states and to end FEMA.

50 Billion for rural hospitals? 10 billion per year for 5 years. They are taking away 3x that.

What experts think of the $50 billion rural health fund in Trump’s big bill

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates federal Medicaid spending will be reduced by about $1 trillion over the next decade

WIC and SNAP? Already cut. This also harms farmers who get subsidies and retailers.

Undocumented people are not eligible for the ACA or federal assistance.

Some STATES allow Undocumented people to access Healthcare, but most of that is public health related stuff like vaccines so their kids don't make your kids sick at school.

Oh like how Trump didn’t care until he got funding for his wall that never happened. I guess it’s only ok for the GOP to use a shutdown as a bargaining chip.
I'm glad to finally see an admission that Schumer and his friends are using a shutdown as a bargaining chip. Government services to the citizenry being being cut off and government workers not being paid used to be considered a no-no. Now government workers and the services they provide are seen by Schumer as "bargaining chips".
It cost the American people $11 billion last time. Government shutdown cost US economy $11bn
Let's see how much Schumer's antics will cost us this time.

I was showing the truth about health care for illegal immigrants and the Schumer Shutdown.
Right. And what does that have to do with my post about the rural hospital fund?

It's amazing to me how many people are willing to harm themselves for the opportunity to inflict what they think will harm someone else more.

The cuts the dems are trying to stop aren't going to just affect people on Medicare and Medicaid. The cost for everyone's insurance is going to go up, employer premiums included. I'm just hoping I will be able to keep my insurance this year. I may have to change to something with less coverage and higher copays.

They GOP is trying to focus people on blocking non existent undocumented people getting care so Americans don't focus on how this is going to affect them personally.

This is the prior text that the proposed change would revert to. Perhaps you can explain how this would mean that illegal aliens would be able to get healthcare:

(v)(1) Notwithstanding the preceding provisions of this section, except as provided in paragraphs (2) and (4), no payment may be made to a State under this section for medical assistance furnished to an alien who is not lawfully admitted for permanent residence or otherwise permanently residing in the United States under color of law.

(2) Payment shall be made under this section for care and services that are furnished to an alien described in paragraph (1) only if—

(A) such care and services are necessary for the treatment of an emergency medical condition of the alien,

(B) such alien otherwise meets the eligibility requirements for medical assistance under the State plan approved under this title (other than the requirement of the receipt of aid or assistance under title IV, supplemental security income benefits under title XVI, or a State supplementary payment), and

(C) such care and services are not related to an organ transplant procedure.

(3) For purposes of this subsection, the term “emergency medical condition” means a medical condition (including emergency labor and delivery) manifesting itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that the absence of immediate medical attention could reasonably be expected to result in—

(A) placing the patient’s health in serious jeopardy,

(B) serious impairment to bodily functions, or

(C) serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part.

As I see it, the additions made by the BBB more explicitly define who can receive care, but the existing text still makes it clear that only people in the country legally are eligible for benefits.

At the expense of the taxpayers. No wonder Schumer sees it as nothing more than a bargaining chip--as long as the MSM paints the narrative that it's anyone other than Schumer and his friends who caused the shutdown.

Shutdowns aren't a cut. They're an expense. Remember, it cost us $11 billion in 2019 when Schumer thought government workers were bargaining chips last time.

Who is not negotiating?
What's to negotiate? The Republicans all voted to keep the government open. Democrats all voted to NOT keep it open. Now people suffer because it's shut down.
When Republicans were in the minority, they were blamed for shutdowns. Now it's dems in the minority, and Republicans still get blamed for the shutdown. Should Republicans negotiate with the MSM to stop the bias in their reporting? Or should they negotiate with the dems to stop relying on MSM bias and using government workers as bargaining chips, and holding the American economy hostage?
