Schumer’s Bid To Shut Down Government Exposes Democratic Fissures​

Senate Democrats blocked a clean extension of government funding late Tuesday evening, but a handful of Democrats bucked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in an effort to avert a looming government shutdown.

Three members of the Democratic caucus — Sens. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada and Angus King of Maine — voted with Republicans to fund the government. The bipartisan spending bill still failed to clear the upper chamber’s 60-vote threshold during a vote of 55 to 45.

The vote highlighted internal disagreement among Senate Democrats over whether to plunge the country into a government shutdown. The trio notably voted with Schumer to prevent a government funding lapse in March.

“ cannot support a costly government shutdown that would hurt Nevada families and hand even more power to this reckless administration,” Cortez Masto said in part in a statement following the vote.

Democrats’ $1.5 trillion counter-proposal that would undo cuts to foreign aid and public broadcasting as well as reverse GOP reforms to Medicaid also failed to get the requisite 60 votes to clear the upper chamber.

Senate Republicans hounded Democrats on Tuesday over their hypocrisy on rejecting a short-term spending bill despite rubber-stamping 13 similar measures under former President Joe Biden.

First, the government has had years to correct the imbalance of funding. They have raised the debt level 78 times since 1960.

I think the rest of the GOP too deserve some blame because they have not addressed the 44 democratic senators concerns. They represent about half of America and nearly every large city. Trump's problem is that he extended the tax cuts, increased spending in the military and homeland security and wants the cuts to fall on the poor who already are faced with higher inflation due to the tariffs.

I have a big problem too with why the government pays the back salaries of all Federal Employees when they shut the government down. Like someone in the private sector, they need to face the realities and file for unemployment, not get backpay for the days they do not work. The 2018-2019 shutdown - "According to the Congressional Budget Office, the shutdown cost the government $3 billion in back pay for furloughed workers, plus $2 billion in lost tax revenues due to reduced tax evasion compliance activities by the Internal Revenue Service, and a smaller amount of lost fees such as for visits to national parks, for a total of about $5 billion."

Apparently rhe Democrats can't. I remember when Democrats were in power and couldn't get a deal done. Who was blamed? The Republicans. It was a Republican shut down. Now the Republicans cant get a deal done. Who gets the blame? Republicans.

Both sides do it when they want or need something bad enough. Harry Reid did it to get Obama appointments through. McConnell did it to get SCOTUS picks through. Thune not only did it for Trump nominees they did a bulk approval instead of individual votes a last month. The senate isn't supposed to require 60 votes for everything anyway.
