  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Schumer’s Bid To Shut Down Government Exposes Democratic Fissures

Senate Democrats blocked a clean extension of government funding late Tuesday evening, but a handful of Democrats bucked Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in an effort to avert a looming government shutdown.

Three members of the Democratic caucus — Sens. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada and Angus King of Maine — voted with Republicans to fund the government. The bipartisan spending bill still failed to clear the upper chamber’s 60-vote threshold during a vote of 55 to 45.

The vote highlighted internal disagreement among Senate Democrats over whether to plunge the country into a government shutdown. The trio notably voted with Schumer to prevent a government funding lapse in March.

cannot support a costly government shutdown that would hurt Nevada families and hand even more power to this reckless administration,” Cortez Masto said in part in a statement following the vote.

Democrats’ $1.5 trillion counter-proposal that would undo cuts to foreign aid and public broadcasting as well as reverse GOP reforms to Medicaid also failed to get the requisite 60 votes to clear the upper chamber.

Senate Republicans hounded Democrats on Tuesday over their hypocrisy on rejecting a short-term spending bill despite rubber-stamping 13 similar measures under former President Joe Biden.

Democrats Dismiss Concerns About Key Program Going Unfunded During Imminent Schumer-Caused Shutdown

Senate Democrats, appearing to move full steam ahead with plunging the country into a government shutdown, are mum on the consequences for millions of women and babies who could go hungry during a prolonged funding lapse.

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), which helps assist low-income parents and children with groceries, is expected to face substantial disruptions during a government shutdown. Despite the prospect of WIC running out of funding within days after a funding lapse, Senate Democrats have largely dismissed concerns that WIC recipients will not be able to access benefits during an indefinite shutdown.

I had to AI this as I believe only AI can cut through to the truth these days.

The "One Big Beautiful Bill Act of 2025," which was signed by the current administration in July 2025, has been reported to contain deep rollbacks and cuts to federal nutrition programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).
According to reports, the law reduces funding and is projected to force states to turn away a significant number of eligible mothers and children from WIC starting in the next year.
It is also important to note that the administration's budget proposal for Fiscal Year 2026, which preceded the bill, had already proposed substantial cuts to WIC, including a significant reduction to the Cash Value Benefit (CVB) for fruits and vegetables.

Clearly, controlling all three branches of government isn’t enough for the GOP to effectively govern and avoid a shutdown.
Clearly, the Senate still has their rules in effect where the Senate needs to have 60 affirmative votes to advance a bill into law.

Like I said, it’s not enough for the GOP. They need total control or they can’t get anything done.

They can change the rules like they did for nominations.

I am sure they would have no problem after the midterms.

First, the government has had years to correct the imbalance of funding. They have raised the debt level 78 times since 1960.
So everyone's at fault, it is not Schumer and the 44 democrats in the Senate. If there is a moral high ground the one that comes the closest is the sole conservative Sen. Rand Paul. https://www.politico.com/news/2025/05/25/rand-paul-debt-ceiling-hike-00369740

I think the rest of the GOP too deserve some blame because they have not addressed the 44 democratic senators concerns. They represent about half of America and nearly every large city. Trump's problem is that he extended the tax cuts, increased spending in the military and homeland security and wants the cuts to fall on the poor who already are faced with higher inflation due to the tariffs.

I have a big problem too with why the government pays the back salaries of all Federal Employees when they shut the government down. Like someone in the private sector, they need to face the realities and file for unemployment, not get backpay for the days they do not work. The 2018-2019 shutdown - "According to the Congressional Budget Office, the shutdown cost the government $3 billion in back pay for furloughed workers, plus $2 billion in lost tax revenues due to reduced tax evasion compliance activities by the Internal Revenue Service, and a smaller amount of lost fees such as for visits to national parks, for a total of about $5 billion."

Are you ignoring the facts that Senator Chuck Schumer and the Democratic Party Senators are refusing to pass the bill to fund the government? When 60 votes are needed, then the 53 GOP Senators cannot do it by themselves.

Tough. Does no one know how to work out a deal both sides can agree upon?

Apparently rhe Democrats can't. I remember when Democrats were in power and couldn't get a deal done. Who was blamed? The Republicans. It was a Republican shut down. Now the Republicans cant get a deal done. Who gets the blame? Republicans.
In fact for weeks qe heard about how terrible the Republicans were for causing a shut down. The media and democrats trotted out everyone they could to say how they were going to suffer if Republicans shut the government down by not agreeing with Democrats.

Now? Not a peep out of the media or Democrats because they are rhe ones shutting it down.

Yeah, not buying your analysis.

Right, right. Two parties but only one is to blame for the dysfunction, right?
I remember when Democrats were in power and couldn't get a deal done.
Me too but thankfully now we have Mr "Art of the Deal."

So it goes in politics.

Yeah and now it's your turn. How are the Republicans showing they are any better than those terrible mean old incompetent America hating Dems who couldn't get anything done while they had control of both houses of Congress and blamed everything on the other side?

Whittle down the filibuster!?
Bold and potentially, (eventually) fatal move for the party that initiates that!

Both sides do it when they want or need something bad enough. Harry Reid did it to get Obama appointments through. McConnell did it to get SCOTUS picks through. Thune not only did it for Trump nominees they did a bulk approval instead of individual votes a last month. The senate isn't supposed to require 60 votes for everything anyway.
