• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I tried the patch a couple of years ago and I smoke a pack a day. I was waking up in the middle of the night with nightmares and I felt all nervous during the day. I think it was the lowest dosage too.

I came to this forum tonight looking for inspiration to quit myself and after seeing so many other people struggling with this addiction I feel compelled to try and help.

I have prayed about it and asked for help and I feel God's presence in trying to help me. In my humanness however I keep turning away and making excuses. LIke the other day my husband said something to upset me and I immediately gave myself the permission to pick up a cigarette. It is such a battle! I will continue to pray and ask for help and be specific in my prayer and struggles witht this addiction. Maybe just by stating all of this publicly It will help me stay the course. I dont know.

God bless you in your efforts to quit. I'm sure we both (all) will if we believe he can take this ugly habit away from us!

Anyone quit using the patch, I only smoke a couple cigs a day, I'm not sure if even the lowest dose patch would contain to much nicotine.

I found the patch pretty easy to quit. I never smoked though. The lowest strength one that Walmart sold was pretty weak-- I could tolerate it even with ephedrine and caffeine in my system, and my blood pressure and pulse were still fine.

The 21mg patch was a monster though. Even with no other stimulants in my system I felt horrible unless I taped part of it off.

You can always tape off part of the patch to cut the strength if needed.

Check out the patches again. I used nicotine patches a while back to help diet (nicotine's a great anorectic), the lowest strength ones I had no problems with even with no tolerance to nicotine at all. (I'm not a smoker/tobacco user.) The max strength ones (~20mg) I could never use, but I didn't use nicotine for very long so I probably never developed much of a tolerance. I was taking ephedrine and caffeine at the same time, so I can relate to feeling overstimulated.

Also, you can tape off part of the patch to reduce the strength further if needed. When in doubt, MacGyver it, you can't go wrong with duct tape and a swiss army knife.

The dream stuff is due to norepinephrine, really pretty interesting, but anyway just take it off in the evening if it's causing problems. Nicotine's plasma half-life is only 30 minutes, it wears off pretty quickly.

I'm using the patch, they do have a 7 mg strength, the package tells you what strength to buy according to how much so smoke. If you are struggling it may be to your benefit to try it.
God Bless

I used the patch to quit many times. The patch would work only if I allowed it to. I found out through my many quits that it is really a mind thing. If you are sick and tired of this nasty addiction you WILL do it. Don't get me wrong the last and final time I quit it wasn't easy but it is do-able. God can help if you ALLOW him to, but you have to do the footwork. I do recommend the patch (as it will take the edge off) while you are trying to put this addiction to rest. If you have bad dreams with it at night take it off, I did...I have learned through my many addictions that quitting will work only if YOU WORK IT...God bless and keep the faith..
