Later Paul explained the "in" in Romans 8:
The Spirit of God or the Spirit of Christ refers to the Paraclete. The Paraclete is the special operation of the Holy Spirit which dwells in a believer's human spirit permanently. This is a spiritual reality.9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells [G3611] in you [plural]. Anyone [singular] who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
