  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The oceans are getting hotter = more heatwaves

Changes such as ice ages and warming are measured in thousand or millions of years. The temperature change in the last 10 years is unprecedented.
Yes! And we know what causes the ice ages - wobbles in the earth's orbit and axis that change where the incoming sunlight hits.

It takes about 800 years for the ice to expand, and as it does it traps CO2 under the ice sheets accounting for 40% of the eventual cooling anyway.

But today's warming? NO 'wobbles' that explain why it's getting hotter - and it's getting hotter than any warm period in the last few million years of the ice age cycle.

Because the ozone layer is compromised

It’s why the ocean is warming

The ozone is indeed compromised

It is the compound form of your whole post (all 11 words of it) that I was responding to. The hole in the ozone layer IS NOT the cause of warming of the oceans. See -- greenhouse gases -- carbon dioxide.

It’s like swiss cheese…
Hi John,
can you please spend some time on Wikipedia? Look up ozone hole and climate change. Both are risks, but with very different causes and very different effects. You seem to be confusing the two. It's like saying traffic jams are bad, therefore everyone should drive an EV. Different problems with different causes and different solutions.

Can you please try to make sense in your posts?

You said the ozone hole, as if there was only one

Instead of everywhere in the ozone layer

The ocean is warming because the Sun is shining through the ozone

As if the ozone wasn’t there because it sort of isn’t
In answer to your first post - there may indeed be many thin patchy areas of ozone - but there is a major concentration of the ozone hole people speak of in popular language as THE Ozone Hole over Antarctica. I don't mind using that term, just as people talk about 'Ice ages' even though that's not the correct term, or 'Global warming' even though this conversation was always within the Climate Sciences.

Now - because you're reluctant to look up wikipedia to learn things... here are the things.

OZONE CAUSES: "The main causes of ozone depletion and the ozone hole are manufactured chemicals, especially manufactured halocarbon refrigerants, solvents, propellants, and foam-blowing agents (chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), HCFCs, halons), referred to as ozone-depleting substances (ODS)."

OZONE DEPLETION EFFECTS: "Since the ozone layer absorbs UVB ultraviolet light from the sun, ozone layer depletion increases surface UVB levels (all else equal), which could lead to damage, including an increase in skin cancer."
And lots of other effects on plants and animals.

OZONE and climate change - some say if anything it has a COOLING effect - but NASA more recently concluded no noticable effect.

CLIMATE CHANGE is about burning fossil fuels and increasing the world's greenhouse gases like CO2 and methane which "trap heat" trying to go out rather than having "holes to let more light in".

Basically, by conflating ozone depletion with climate change you've got the science inside out and upside down. Try reading more. I'm no scientist - but even I knew this stuff.

The CO2 difference is 0.01%

You think that can heat the oceans significantly

A Funnel Web spider bite injects a vastly tinier percent of venom compared to the person's body weight or even blood supply. Yet without antivenom it can still kill you. It's not the percentage of something but the effectiveness of it that matters.
Repeatable, demonstrable physics in a lab shows how powerful CO2 is at trapping how much heat.
Even Mythbusters have done backyard tests that show how it works.
Try to move beyond trite Republican soundbytes you might have heard over the years and actually read some science.

there is the power of the Sun directly heating water
There is the power of just saying random things without linking to any papers that might provide any data about anything we're saying - like the power of Unicorn vomit to run a Hummer.
