Pardon, but all names are names. Some are just newer than others. All names had to originate from somewhere. These are just surfacing now. Please be respectful. How would you like it if someone told you that your name wasn't "really a name?" I just get irked when people are so insensitive about names. Diversity is cool.
whoa! some people do get named after a thing but some parents do make a name up.

A lot of people have names these days that aren't really names...the next door neighbors named their kid "Chantz".

..?

I actually love the fact that I have a unique name, ;) and I have never thought that is wasn't actually a name. I just go by Kellee because thats what my parents called me and I got used to it, but I wouldn't hate it if people called me Kelleen..

Let me say first that I respect the fact that your name is *your name*. I meant no insult to you or your personage.

But...I stand by what I said. Putting a bunch of pretty letters together is not a 'name'. Yes, all names had to originate from somewhere. No, that doesn't mean that 'Chantz' is just surfacing now. New names are fine, but would take the form of "destiny" as a name, or "faith", or so on-using words as names and slightly changing them. So I guess in a sense, my example is a poor one, because "Chantz" would just be 'chance', only made into a name. But what does Chantz mean? Something random, something coincidental. Why would you want to name your kid that? Teonn and Kelvin are not real names. They have no inherent meaning.

'Diversity is cool'...perhaps, but ignorance is not.

Okay, let's start with the beginning. God has a name, doesn't he? "I am that I am"...the Eternal, Self-Existent. Jesus has a name, doesn't he? "God's savior". All the animals were brought to Adam for Adam to name them, weren't they? And didn't Adam name his wife? What did he name her? Eve, because she was to be the mother of all the living. And so, that is what Eve means. Names are supposed to have meanings.

All names had no meaning at some point.

That's not true. I don't know why people believe that. Names mean things, lol!

A name is just like any other word. They are given definition over time. Kelvin will have a meaning soon enough if people want it to.

What did Eve mean before she was created? Adam? What did David mean at that time? Tim? Bob? Thomas?

...

Have you ever heard the term, 'earning a name for yourself'? Or, what about last names? All of our last names have meanings, don't they? They're meant to describe our families. A name is a description of something. Anything else belongs to cheesy fantasy or sci-fi. :)

Eve meant what it means, "mother of all the living" (?). That woman just didn't have a name until 'eve' was given her. It was a term used to describe her.

BTW, I've just read that dolphins apparently give each other unique names.

When you name a child, just say Andrew, which means strong and manly, how do you know the child will turn out that way? So then the meaning is just in the name itself but not in the person necesarily.

True, which is why some cultures gave an adult name at 'manhood' or whatever. This is exactly why Peter's name was changed from...what was it, Simon?
