What is AI?

I'm not so skeptical as I am more a philosophical pragmatist than a material reductionist, but at the same time, there's alot of perverse hype around AI right now, probably being egged on by companies like Google or OpenAI that want to score big with investors. It's becoming a bit of a speculative bubble, like Dutch tulips or the dot.com boom.

Nevertheless, people are indeed prone to mythologizing technology, especially in negative ways, at least in the US (in Japan, people are less afraid of the notion of AI, probably because of the influence of Buddhism and Shinto).

Has anyone here seen the Terminator movies? How about Eagle Eye? How about I Robot? Fiction is now fact imho.

The problem I see with AI is that it can present false identities and information from fake people, who
look and sound authentic. It can be politicians or celebrities delivering bogus messages to the
public.

Also, there are dangers in AI in that people forget that they're not talking with a person, but a computer.
It has no feelings or emotions in what it is presenting to the questioner.

The other possibility I see is that AI can train itself to learn various algorithms and possibly get
into a national defense system and cause a nuclear war. At least that's what I think it can do.
I'm not familiar enough with AI to know for sure how far it can go.

If you've even watched the Netflix series, "The 100," it's what happens. As the people living
on a large space station watch life on earth destroyed by a nuclear war started by an AI system,
which invades the US defense systems, making it think that China has launched nuclear missiles
toward the US, which it didn't, but the US reacts as if it did, thereby causing a nuclear war which
destroys human and animal life. At least that's what is thought at the beginning of the series.
Anyway, watch the series it was pretty good.

Yeah there will never be some "self-aware AI". Well since Satan cannot create life only GOD can and some computer code can not be possessed lol. what you do is look at just WHO is doing all the so called "coding" that's your AI.

Yeah there will never be some "self-aware AI". Well since Satan cannot create life only GOD can and some computer code can not be possessed lol. what you do is look at just WHO is doing all the so called "coding" that's your AI.

Looking at Rev 13 - I have wondered regarding the two beasts who needed to be in close proximity to have authority - could one be a person and the other a computer?

11 Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spoke as a dragon. 12 He exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. I am no end times buff - just wondering...

Well, I am an end time buff, and I do believe the image of the beast could be some sort of AI. Why? Because it will know who is not worshiping the beast and it will have the means to kill those who do not.

The British and Americans actually didn't fight even though Britain was in decline after WWI, despite the fact that both Britain and the US had warplans for such a scenario. That just shows conflict isn't inevitable.

53 years ago there was a movie about AI taking over the world called: Colossus: The Forbin Project.

WarGames was flawed from the beginning. Passwords could never be learned one
character at a time. I worked for DEC and we had intranet long before the WWW was
