has anyone heard of or tried "black cohash?"

It's mentioned in posts 92 and 93. I use it periodically. Also helpful are dong quai, Vitamin E, and Evening Primrose Oil.

I've heard of black cohash and dong quai being used for menopausal symptoms but, with herbal medicine, I always ask myself the question:
"Is it safe?" (I mean, for the kidneys and liver.) Before taking it, I would research it via the internet to check whether it is totally safe.

Also, it is important to be aware that herbal medicines can cause allergy. So, look out for any signs of allergy such as a rash or swelling in the face.

'glad to have found this thread. i am turning 44 this year and i think i am getting hot flashes...looks like it is going to get worse :(
I found a good quality Vitamin E alleviates hot flashes for me. I take 400 units in the morning and then again in the evening. Work up to 800 though. I sincerely hope things get better and not worse.

Yes, research for allergies, or if this or that can be taken if you have high blood pressure, etc. As for associated risks, pharmaceutical drugs have been proved to have possible risks. I personally choose to go with the things the Lord has made before they're tampered with by man. However, it's a choice we all must make. :) Pray.

Hello, all. Perhaps my hysterectomy will keep me from suffering too much from menopause, but I have had hot flash events from time-to-time, although they seem to be limited to a few days at a time. My ability to sleep was becoming an issue as was joint pain and feelings of sadness, but since I've been making a genuine effort to put a lot time and effort into walking, everything is better.

Is exercise that big a part of the equation or was I not going to suffer that much to begin with? My sister, who is 16 months my senior, is having a horrible time with menopause even with prescribed medication. Our physiologies are very different and she's never had children, but I continue to be amazed at how very different womens' experiences are at this stage of our lives.

I've been on HRT for about 3 months now, the lowest dose available, and my hot flushes (my main symptom) are gone. Downside, periods every month as opposed to every now and again but they're lighter so I can live with it! I'll stay on the HRT until my Uni course finishes in summer 2010 then I'll think about coming off it and trying natural treatment again. I just need to get through this course!

Have you noticed any side effects from the HRT?

Nothing so far. Other than the ones you want (no hot flushes)! Blood pressure still good, weight hasn't altered, no mood swings. I stress that I'm on the lowest available dose and I get checked every 3-6 months. Are you thinking of going down the HRT route?

Yes. But not yet as I still have regular cycles. Which brand do you take, if you don't mind me asking?

Not at all. I'm on Elleste Duet 1mg. I don't know if you're in the UK but one downside is that it attracts two lots of prescription charges as it is a combined pill.

As I understand it (and I may be wrong!) all these symptoms can be exhibited in the peri-menopause which can start up to ten years before the menopause proper. The fun just never ends!

Oh lord have mercy. Just shoot me now. Is this what I have to look forward to? I'm seriously not looking forward to 40 now. Ugh, this is gonna suck.

It doesn't all happen immediately. It is a gradual process. I am only now really feeling the effects of peri-menopause. And I've found a wonderful antidote -

St John's Wort.

It is really helping me. I feel younger than before, have more energy, less pain, less depression.

Lavenderbees, just spotted you're in Mousehole so you'll understand what I'm talking about re. prescription charges!

Yes. I see what you mean. I hope they give you a good supply each time.

I've just discovered St John's Wort. It seems to act in a similar way to HRT. Well, it works for me, anyway. It boosts the hormone levels and has made my skin feel smoother and softer than it has done for more than six months now. It is also much cheaper than HRT - only £8.70 for a small bottle but it will last a long time as you only need 20 drops per day.

I only realised how old and weak I had become after taking SJW. It has made a massive difference to my energy levels and strength. (And I've only been taking it a couple of days!)

Oh gosh, I would hate to think that anything I've said has made you feel like this! Seriously, it's not the same for everyone; some people simply sail through it, others have an horrendous time and there's every shade of grey in between. The hot flushes did it for me, they weren't awful by any means but they interefered with my energy levels and concentration enough to affect my Uni course. So I had to do something about it and it's worked. I feel fine now. Plus there's plenty of things you can do about uncomfortable symptoms on a natural or prescription level.

And I have to tell you there are plenty of compensations about being 40. I have loved my 40s (only 18 months of them left :( !), I've really learned much more about myself and what I can do. I've been able to explore what I'm interested in more and my self-confidence has soared! My kids are older, more independent and, although I miss their reliance on me sometimes, it has meant I'm much freer! Hence the University course, I could never have done that in my 20s or 30s! I actually feel younger than I did then too (dont know about looking it, though a tutor last week thought my daughter and I were sisters!) Seriously, I am an advocate for the 40-something woman!!

Yes, I get three months supply at time, which I guess works out at less than £5 per month. I used St John's Wort too in the early days of the symptoms and they worked wonderfully well. Latterly though I just needed that little bit extra. But if they're still working well for you that's great, stick with them! I have used them for mild depression in the past too.
