The Bible is describing what happens when millions of 100 pound meteorites enter the Earth's atmosphere. It is called "displacement". The Earth will enter a debris field that spans thousands of miles. When viewed from the surface or ground level, looking upwards, the sun will appear black(with dust clouds extending into space).
