  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

does anyone know if two legs evolved into four or four into two - it seems the transitional one and three legs are missing links - twinc

In essence, no four legs evolved into two.

All mammals and birds, for example, have four legs. Its just that in the case of humans and other apes, we call our front legs "arms", and in the case of birds, we call them "wings".

But in broad detail, arms and wings retain many of the same characteristics as the hind legs.

The Hox gene seems to control that aspect of things, and symmetry seems to play a role in the most likely outcomes. Keep in mind that 1, 3 and five legged options might actually occur, but if there is no benefit in terms of survival, or a hindrance to survival, it wouldn't flourish.

some insects etc have more than four legs and if four legs are faster than two then six or more should be even faster - is this not intelligent design for with one leg we would be hopping mad, with three like a stool we would be coming and going nowhere and with five we would be forever tripping up - twinc

o.k.

It's just that when you were talking of four legs and two legs (and three and one), I presumed you were thinking in terms of animals such as fish, amphibians, mammals, birds etc.

In the case of insects, go back to Michael's post. And in the case of why even numbers of legs - go back to Michael's post.

Once symmetry evolved then pairing would be the result - namely 2,4, 6, 8 .... legs. At least that's my understanding of it.

What makes you think that an omnipotent, supernatural designer couldn't design an organism with three legs that was not superior to an organism with 6 legs? Are you suggesting that the omnipotent, supernatural designer is limited in some ways?

Bipedal vertebrates still have four limbs. With that kept in mind, what does that seem to suggest about your hypothesis that there could be one- or three-legged transitions?

(Not being sarcastic or rude. As an education major, I have a habit with answering questions with questions!)

Sort of like humans in that respect.

Being able to ambulate while gathering food with 2 extremities would have some survival advantage. Also, having 2 limbs always available to use tools is one reason humans built a complex civilization and other primates didn't. But bipedalism has some drawbacks. You can't run as fast as with 4 legs. And there are much higher forces on the spine. That's probably why back problems are so common. There's no selection pressure to favor more robust intervetebral discs, and stronger spinal muscles and ligaments before the child rearing years.
