The seventh day is part of creation and time itself. It was created to be blessed and sanctified time for God and His creation.
Shortly after creation we have the fall of mankind. This fall brought man into a downward spiral away from God and fellowship with Him. Everyone one of the Ten Commandments was part of creation because they reflect the righteous nature of God and His desire for His creation.
Every sin and crime committed in the world has it root in the Ten Commandments. Mankind, by nature, should have been living by the Ten Commandments but as you know, man was not very faithful. Adam and Eve dishonored their Father, Eve coveted and stole and so on. Cain committed the SIN of murder. Guilt and condemnation from lying, stealing, adultery and coveting were all common place prior to Sinai. Guilt and shame accompanied these behaviors because they were against God's image and nature of which we were created in.
The Ten Commandments were written in stone because of transgressions. In other words, mankind was violating these creation principles before the Law was written in stone. Worshiping God only, turning away from idolatry, honoring God's name and remembering the seventh day are all part of coming to personally know God and falling in love with Him. Jesus magnified the spirit of the Law when He said, "All the Law hangs on Loving God and loving neighbor" The first four teach us how to express our love for God and the last six teach us how to express our love for mankind.
When a person keeps the Sabbath holy it testifies of a restored relationship with His Creator. It sets him apart from everyone else who refuses to worship and honor God. Some will say that we are to worship God seven days a week, this is true, but they fail to understand that keeping the seventh day holy is, in itself, an act of worship and is an expression of our love towards God. If we love God and neighbor it will look like someone keeping the commandments.
