Dear Jude: You do NOT have your listening ears on!

Kolasis aionion -Matthew 25:46-

Greek scholar William Barclay wrote concerning kolasis aionion (age-during corrective chastisement) in Matthew 25:46

“The Greek word for punishment is kolasis, which was not originally an ethical word at all. It originally meant the pruning of trees to make them grow better. There is no instance in Greek secular literature where kolasis does not mean remedial punishment. It is a simple fact that in Greek kolasis always means remedial punishment. God’s punishment is always for man’s cure.”

Fifteen literally translated (not interpretively translated) Bibles that reveal what God will do with the sinners in Matthew 25:46

Concordant Literal, Young’s literal, Wilson’s Emphatic Diaglott, Rotherham’s Emphasized, Scarlett’s, J.W. Hanson’s New Covenant, Twentieth Century, Ferrar Fenton, The Western New Testament, Weymouth’s (unedited), Clementson’s, The New Testament of our Lord and Savior Jesus Anointed, The Restoration of Original Sacred Name Bible, Bullinger’s Companion Bible margins, Jonathan Mitchell’s translation (2010).

Concerning the duration of kolasis (literally - corrective punishment), Matt. 25:46 says (KJV),

“And these shall go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into life eternal.”

Scarlett’s New Testament written in 1792 has “aeonian punishment” in place to “everlasting punishment.”

“And these will go away into aeonian punishment: but the righteous into aeonian life.”

The New Covenant by Dr. J.W. Hanson written in 1884 renders Matt. 25:46:

“And these shall go away into aeonian chastisement, and the just into aeonian life.”

Young’s Literal Translation first published in 1898 and reprinted many times since uses the following words:

“And these shall go away to punishment age-during, but the righteous to life age-during.”

Professor Young also compiled Young’s Concordance, where one can check the translation of each Hebrew or Greek word as translated in the KJV.

The Twentieth Century New Testament first printed in the year 1900 has:

“And these last will go away ‘into aeonian punishment,’ but the righteous ‘into aeonian life.’”

The Holy Bible in Modern English by Ferrar Fenton first published in 1903 gives the rendering:

"And these He will dismiss into a long correction, but the well-doers to an enduring life.

The New Testament in Modern Speech, by Dr. Weymouth, says:

“And these shall go away into punishment of the ages, but the righteous into life of the ages.”

Dr. Weymouth most frequently adopts such terms as “life of the ages,” “fire of the ages;” and in Rev. 14:6, “The good news of the ages.”

It is a matter to regret that the editors of the most recent edition of Dr. Weymouth’s version have reverted to the KJV renderings for the passages containing the Greek word aion, eon, or age.

The Western New Testament published in 1926 renders Matt. 25:46 as follows:

“And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into life eternal.”

The translation, however, has a footnote on Matthew 21:19 on the word “forever” which is the same word for “eternal” which says: "Literally, for the age.”

Clementson’s The New Testament (1938) shows,

“And these shall go away into eonian correction, but the righteous into eonian life.”

Wilson’s Emphatic Diaglott (1942 edition) translates the verse,

“And these shall go forth to the aionian cutting-off; but the righteous to aionian life.”

It should be noted that the “cutting-off” refers to pruning a fruit tree to make it bear more fruit.

The idea behind the word is not destructive but productive! Had Jesus wanted to emphasize a destructive end, He would have used the word “timoria.”

The Concordant Version (1930):

“And these shall be coming away into chastening eonian, yet the just into life eonian.”

The New Testament of our Lord and Savior Jesus Anointed printed in 1958 says:

“And these shall go away into agelasting cutting-off and the just into agelasting life.”

Joseph B. Rotherham, in his Emphasized Bible (1959), translates this verse,

“and these shall go away into age-abiding correction, but the righteous into age-abiding life.”

The Restoration of Original Sacred Name Bible copyrighted in 1976

has “age-abiding correction” instead of “everlasting punishment.”

Jonathan Mitchell’s translation (2010) has

"And so, these folks will be going off into an eonian pruning (a lopping-off which lasts for an undetermined length of time; an age-lasting correction; a pruning which has its source and character in the Age), yet the fair and just folks who are in right relationship and are in accord with the Way pointed out [go off] into eonian life (life which has it source and character in the Age; life pertaining to the Age)”.

Even some King James Study Bibles will show the reader in the margins or appendixes that the King’s translators were incorrect in their rendering of "eternal punishment.”

The great Companion Bible by Dr. Bullinger is an example of that.

The "lake of fire" refers to Hell, absolute separation from God and therefore from everything good. There is no actual "fire" of course. Fire as we know it, requiring fuel and oxygen, is part of the physical universe. Fire is used as a symbol of Hell because being in it is the most painful thing we can imagine on Earth. The absolute pain of Hell will be far worse than simply being in fire, worse than we can possibly imagine.

I believe this to be an indirect reference to the Lake of Fire:

"Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire." I Corinthians 3:13-15 (KJV)
No this isn't a reference to the lake of fire. This Paul was speaking only to Christians here - i.e. people who were saved. It refers to the Bema seat judgment where believers will have our lives judged by Christ and receive rewards or not.

Hello F L. Another great thread.

The phrase "lake of fire":

Revelation 19:20
.....Living were cast, the two, into the Lake of the Fire the one burning<2545> in sulfur <2303>
Revelation 20:
10 And the Devil, the one-deceiving<4105> them, was cast into the Lake of the Fire and of sulfur<2303>......
14 And the Death and the Hades<86> were cast into the Lake of the Fire.
This the Death, the second-one, is being the Lake of the Fire .
15 ............... he was cast into the Lake of the Fire.
Revelation 21:8
.........the part of them in the Lake, the one burning<2545> Fire<4442> and sulphur<2306>, which is being the second Death.
============================
Lake of fire - Wikipedia
A lake of fire appears, in both ancient Egyptian and Christian religion, as a place of after-death destruction of the wicked. The phrase is used in four verses of the Book of Revelation. Such a lake also appears in Plato's Phaedo, explicitly identified with Tartarus, where the souls of the wicked are tormented until it is time for them to be reborn, and where some souls are left forever.

The image was also used by the Early Christian Hippolytus of Rome in about the year 200 and has continued to be used by modern Christians. Related is Jewish Gehenna which, among other things, like hell, is a valley near Jerusalem where trash was burned.

The Book of Revelation, written some time in the last half of the first century AD, has five verses that mention a "lake of fire":

Revelation 19:20: "And the beast[6] was taken, and with him the false prophet[7] that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone."
Revelation 20:10 "And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever."
Revelation 20:14-15 "Then Death and Hades[8] were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire." [NKJV]
Revelation 21:8 "But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death."[9]
A commonly accepted and traditional interpretation is that the "lake of fire" and the "second death" are symbolic of eternal pain, pain of loss and perhaps pain of the senses, as punishment for wickedness

Twentieth century
The Catholic Portuguese visionary Lúcia Santos reported that the Virgin Mary (Our Lady of Fatima) had given her a vision of Hell[citation needed] as a sea of fire:

"Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire which seemed to be under the earth. Plunged in this fire were demons and souls in human form, like transparent burning embers, all blackened or burnished bronze, floating about in the conflagration, now raised into the air by the flames that issued from within themselves together with great clouds of smoke, now falling back on every side like sparks in a huge fire, without weight or equilibrium, and amid shrieks and groans of pain and despair, which horrified us and made us tremble with fear."[20]
Universalist eschatology
Early Christian Universalists, most notably Origen of Alexandria (c. 184 – c. 253), and Gregory of Nyssa (c. 335 – c. 395), understood the lake of fire as a symbolic purifying fire used to eliminate the dross from the gold, [21] aka a "refiner's crucible". Origin refers to the "lead of wickedness" that must be refined out of the gold.[22] Origen obtained his Universalist views, known then as apocatastasis,[23] from his mentor Clement of Alexandria (c. 150 – c. 215),[24] who was a student of Pantaenus.

Further evidence that corroborates their understanding that the Lake of fire is a "refiner's crucible" is that the Greek word commonly translated as "lake" also refers to something small, like a pond[28] or a "pool", as translated in the New American Bible (NABRE)[29].

Also, the added detail of "sulfur" in the lake of fire is related to an ancient gold refining technique. Gold refining by sulphurization, also related to Gold parting, is described in detail by ancient writers.[30][31][32][33] When unwanted metals, such as lead and copper, are heated in the presence of sulfur, the chemical reaction reduces the unwanted metals into sulfides, such as Lead(II) sulfide and Copper(I) sulfide. Since sulfur is a much lighter element, atomic number 16 on periodic table, the new sulfide molecules easily float to the top of the crucible as dross. Sulfur is also part of the smelting process related to silver and gold and other metal ores and naturally occurs in these ores.
===============================
The word "Lake" in the rest of the NT
I am posting this from this other thread I created, for those interested:

Is the GREAT CITY in Revelation symbolizing the LAKE OF FIRE?

3041. limne λίμνη (limnē) probably from 3040 occurs 10 times in 10 verses
(through the idea of nearness of shore); a pond (large or small):--lake.

"Lake" is also used in the event of the "Kamikaze" swine/demons" shown in Matthew 8, Mark 5, Luke 8] and in conjunction with "Gennesaret"

Luke 5:
1 And it came to pass, in the multitude pressing on Him to hear the word of God, that He was standing beside the Lake<3041> of Gennesaret<1082>,
2 and He saw two boats standing beside the Lake and the fishermen, having gone away from them, were washing the nets,
Luke 8:22
22 And it came to pass, on one of the days, that He Himself went into a boat with His disciples, and said unto them, 'We may go over to the other side of the Lake', and they set forth,
23 and as they are sailing he fell deeply asleep, and there came down a storm of wind to the Lake<3041>, and they were filling, and were in peril.
33 and the demons having gone forth from the man, did enter into the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep to the Lake, and were choked/drowned.
=========================
Mat 14:34
And having passed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret,
Mark 6:53 And having passed over, they came upon the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore
Luke 5:1
And it came to pass, in the multitude pressing on him to hear the word of God, that he was standing beside the Lake of Gennesaret,
==============
1082. Gennesaret Γεννησαρέτ (Gennēsaret) occurs 3 times in 3 verses
of Hebrew origin (compare 3672); Gennesaret (i.e. Kinnereth),
a lake and plain in Palestine:--Gennesaret.

[That word is vaguely similar to this Greek word for "Gehenna":
1067. Geena γέεννα (geenna)of Hebrew origin (1516 and 2011);
valley of (the son of) Hinnom; ge-henna (or Ge-Hinnom), a valley of Jerusalem, used (figuratively) as a name for the place (or state) of everlasting punishment:--hell.]

Some interesting facts about Lake Gennesaret:

Sea of Galilee - Wikipedia
(Redirected from Lake of Gennesaret)
Sea of Galilee - Kinneret Basin countries Israel, Syria Settlements Tiberias, Tel Katzir

The Sea of Galilee (Hebrew: יָם כִּנֶּרֶת‬, Judeo-Aramaic: יַמּא דטבריא, גִּנֵּיסַר, Arabic: بحيرة طبريا‎), Kinneret or Kinnereth,[3] Lake of Gennesaret, or Lake Tiberias, is a freshwater lake in Israel.
At levels between 215 metres (705 ft) and 209 metres (686 ft) below sea level,[5] it is the lowest freshwater lake on Earth and the second-lowest lake in the world (after the Dead Sea, a saltwater lake).[6] The lake is fed partly by underground springs although its main source is the Jordan River which flows through it from north to south.

All Old and New Testament writers use the term "sea" (Hebrew יָם yam, Greek θάλασσα), with the exception of Luke, [who calls it "the Lake of Gennesaret" (Luke 5:1)], from the Greek λίμνη Γεννησαρέτ (limnē Gennēsaret), the "Grecized form of Chinnereth" according to Easton (1897).

I have thought that maybe just the sins themselves will destroyed in the lake of fire which is the second death, because in Revelation 22:15 the sinners are described as being outside the gates of the city, not in the lake of fire, presumably they can wash their robes and have the right to the tree of life and go into the city (Revelation 22:14), perhaps there is still room for repentance even in the new heaven and earth, though there is no more sin there.

Yes Iranaeus refuted it over 300 years earlier in Adversus Haereses 170AD

2. For as, in the New Testament, that faith of men [to be placed] in God has been increased, receiving in addition [to what was already revealed] the Son of God, that man too might be a partaker of God; so is also our walk in life required to be more circumspect, when we are directed not merely to abstain from evil actions, but even from evil thoughts, and from idle words, and empty talk, and scurrilous language: thus also the punishment of those who do not believe the Word of God, and despise His advent, and are turned away backwards, is increased; being not merely temporal, but rendered also eternal. For to whomsoever the Lord shall say, Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, Matthew 25:41 these shall be damned for ever; and to whomsoever He shall say, Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you for eternity, Matthew 25:34 these do receive the kingdom for ever, and make constant advance in it; since there is one and the same God the Father, and His Word, who has been always present with the human race, by means indeed of various dispensations, and has wrought out many things, and saved from the beginning those who are saved, (for these are they who love God, and follow the Word of God according to the class to which they belong,) and has judged those who are judged, that is, those who forget God, and are blasphemous, and transgressors of His word.

What is the Judgment Seat of Christ / Bema Seat of Christ? | GotQuestions.org

The linked text states: "In context, it is clear that both passages refer to Christians, not unbelievers." Yet, I do not find that statement to be at all clear, since Paul uses the phrase "For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ." [I Cor. 3:11] He used no qualifiers, so I take it as an all-inclusive statement...and why not? BTW, what is a "Bema seat"? I have not seen that term before, and your linked text does not explain it.

No, according to the KJV, it is "Death and Hell" that are cast in. Your attempt to recast Hell as Hades in order to avoid the absurdity of Hell being cast into Hell does not escape me. Anyway it should read "Death and the Grave," not "Hell." Further, please state where the Bible tells us that Sheol has "sections."

VISUAL TIMELINE OF THE ROMAN-JEWISH WAR

Including The Historical Fall of Jerusalem in AD70

The Destruction of Jerusalem - George Peter Holford, 1805AD

History records few events more generally interesting than the destruction of Jerusalem, and the subversion of the Jewish state, by the arms of the Romans. -- Their intimate connexion with the dissolution of the Levitical economy, and the establishment of Christianity in the world ; the striking verification which they afford of so many of the prophecies, both of the Old and New Testament, and the powerful arguments of the divine authority of the Scriptures which are thence derived......................

Meanwhile the horrors of famine grew still more melancholy and afflictive.
The Jews, for of food were at length compelled to eat their belts, their sandals, the skins of their shields, dried grass, and even the ordure of oxen.
In the depth or this horrible extremity, a Jewess of noble family urged by the intolerable cravings of hunger, slew her infant child, and prepared it for a meal ; and had actually eaten one half thereof, when the soldiers, allured by tile smell of food, threatened her with instant death if she refused to discover it. 'Intimidated by this menace, she immediately produced the remains of her son, which petrified them with horror.
At the recital of this melancholy and affecting occurrence, the whole city stood aghast, and poured forth their congratulations on those whom death had hurried away from such heartrending scenes. Indeed, humanity at once shudders and sickens at the narration, nor can any one of the least sensibility reflect upon the pitiable condition to which the female part of the inhabitants of Jerusalem must at this time have been reduced,
"Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but for yourselves and fur your children ; for, behold, the days are coming in which they shall say, 'Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the breasts that never gave suck." Luke xxiii. 29.
=====================================
Matthew 24:19
Woe yet to those pregnant,
and to those giving suck in those the days
Mark 13:17

Woe yet to those pregnant,
and to those giving suck in those the days
Luke 21:23

Woe yet to those pregnant,
and to those giving suck in those the days
for there shall be great distress on the land and wrath on this people;

Paul is speaking to believers so I don't know what the confusion is.

Since when does "condemnation" equate to defeating something? It's just words without proof.

Why would someone who is building on the foundation of Christ be sent to the lake of fire?

Dear BNR: BE patient my friend. We are moving in due time to the ingredient of the Lake in English and koine.

The mighty foundation of the Lord our God is where are dwelling place must be. The Book where the enrolled of His amazing love and grace are found is NOT the whole story. It is the foundation upon which His ongoing working in the present tense invades more and more of Him in His "especially".

The problem is how much territory in our triune being has He grasped into union with Himself. How far has the Invasion of all invasions proceeded?

Welcome to the overcomer! Yes, the ONLY one who is NOT "hurt" by the Lake, AKA the 2nd death.

I have been walking with the Lamb for a few moons now. Am I an "overcomer", oh Lord? If it has not been completely accomplished in fullness,"hurt" me some more is my prayer to You.
