  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

How did you get that from what I wrote?

Your argument included only scriptural examples.

Those are all solid ways as Psalm 119 painfully teaches us.

God’s answered prayer and His will working in our lives is living and active. He builds faith, challenges us, forges us and as a Good Father chastises us. This is in the living walk in the Holy Spirit. St Paul says to the Ephesians “be filled with the Holy Spirit.”

I never said they weren't solid ways, but that they weren't the ONLY ways.

Of course they won’t. The cross is foolishness to those not in Christ.

By pretending obvious contradictions do not exist, it's not "the cross" that would be at fault for those not in Christ choosing to remain not in Christ.

And you trusted their witness alone?

Yes.

Read the quotes again. He actually said in the big things and small.

You're missing the forest for the trees.

So what you have taken from this thread is that some have claimed God literally breathed on a piece of papyrus and that’s “God breathed?”

Maybe like a bellows...God breathes on Paul and his hands start writing all of God's automated dictation even faster.

Indeed. The Bible tells us about prayer.

Jeremiah 33:3.

People were praying long before there was ever a bible. Prayer didn't originate with a book, but with a living, eternal God. If we include the OT text of Job which is said to have been written first, then Job must have learned how to pray before any books were written, or the book of Job couldn't have described him doing it.

I believe God spoke to me audibly, and I've read testimonies which say the same.
I'd be very wary of saying that God can only do something in one way, or a certain way.

If the individule responds to God's natural revelation, they will respond to the Word of God. Like Jesus said, my sheep know my voice. The pages of Scripture contain a unique witness from crucial times in redemptive history. I don't know what alternative sources might be siutable but your not going to find anything like the Bible.

One of the major reasons that Jesus and the prophets did miracles was to confirm the Word of God.

"...the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen." (Mark 16:20).

This means that if somebody actually heard God today, they would have to confirm that this was indeed the Word of God by signs (miracles) following. Why do you think God gave Moses the ability to do miracles? It was to confirm that he was indeed a prophet of God and it was to authenticate the word of God that he would give to his people.

Well in my case God said, "Jesus loves you"; the miracle was that I believed it and it changed me.

Jesus said "My sheep know my voice".
If we believe we have heard God speak to us, we need to test his message against Scripture - since he will not contradict it. But if we are his sheep and know his voice, we shouldn't need a dramatic miracle to persuade us that it was God who spoke.

First, John 10:27 is in context to Jesus speaking, and not God the Father (Which is the voice you are claiming to hear). Second, when we read John 10:27 say: "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me," we have to understand that Revelation 3:20 says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me."

Does every believer come to Jesus via an audible voice via Revelation 3:20? No. In fact, I believe I heard the voice of God via Scripture when I first came to the Lord. God was talking to me by His Word, the Bible. I did not need to hear an audible voice to hear God.

Side Note:

Also, God the Father communicated to the sons of thunder that they were to hear the Son
(See Luke 9:35).

No, maybe you didn't NEED to hear an audible voice, and thousands have come to Christ without ever hearing one.

But it doesn't discount the possibility that God may speak that way if he so chooses.

While God has the capability to speak audibly any time He chooses, I don't believe He will do so while we are living out our faith under the New Covenant (until Christ returns). The New Covenant ended with words in Revelation 22:18 that we are not to add to God's Word. In Revelation, there are many miracles that will be taking place, and signs that will herald the return of the Lord Jesus Christ. There are going to be many end times deceptions, and false Christs. The Bible repeatedly warns that Jesus will return in the clouds. So He will not be making special visits to people to speak to them, etc. So what about Paul? Well, the apostles were Jews and His return will be before many witnesses. Jesus did not really return when He revealed Himself to Paul. Paul was called the last apostle because he was the last apostle to have seen the risen Lord.

At least now I better understand where some of this "bible is God" or "bible is the same as God" type of thinking is coming from.

But he does - occasionally.

God is spirit. But we revere His Word (the Bible) because it conveys the thoughts and mind of God in what He desires us to do. He speaks to us through His stories, psalms, proverbs, commands, and teachings via His Word (the Bible). But to say that the Bible is not a part of God (in that it does not convey His thoughts, etc.) in any way is to make an attempt so as to eliminate the mind of God.

And we only have your word for that.
Again, was the words (you heard) confirmed by signs following?

I've told you; he said "Jesus loves you", and my life changed.
From depression to joy.
