I am a hipster that does get mad when his band blows up. And where do you see indie on the charts? Franz Ferdinand? Please.
Until I see a soccer mom eulogizing Muslimgauze or complaining that Wolf Parade is getting too big too fast, then you can save it.
franz ferdinand is getting lots of attention and play.
It's not about 'selling' when it comes to indie, it's about exposure. Lots of bands that used to be indie are now more mainstream (not in sound, but in acceptance/exposure)
like Modest Mouse, action action, the blood brothers, the Faint, Cursive, Bright Eyes, From Autumn to Ashes, Atreyu and lots of stuff like that. Stuff that a few years ago nobody cared about, now a lot of it is getting coverage and such. Becoming a more 'mainstream' sect of indie music.
sure, there are plenty of indie bands that are truly indie, and i respect that. But it makes sense that bands would want exposure.
What if you're favorite indie band had tons of airplay, sold a decent amount of records, and had music videos played regularly would you consider them indie even though they have the attention of the mainstream? I wouldn't, but I'd consider their 'style' to still be indie, but they're acceptence to be mainstream. There are plenty of bands who are indie that may have reached a mainstream status. Whether they've sold out or not to reach such attention is a different topic.
