  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

FYHCYWLAP wasn't that great, and DCW has just a slight edge on TBWTAS because they don't let that other guy sing as much. This is all IMHO, of course.

I never read the NME after they only gave FYHCYWLAP 2* - in the same edition as giving some awful pop-r&b album 4*

It's really strange to have a conservative person here in the indie places. Our type of music scene isn't exactly breeding grounds for people with your idealogies.

and what makes you say that?

i didn't mean it like that.

it just seems indie is on the charts, etc etc, and there's lots of it floating about. it's not as hard to access (Heck, you wouldn't believe all the american indie-rock i saw in japan that i never thought i'd see)

And mainstream "used" to be all that "bubblegum pop" like Nsync, BSB, Britney Spears and all that kind of thing. The new mainstream is independent music.

And if you're upset at me thinking this, you're probably just a scenester who gets mad when other people start noticing an indie band and don't give you credit for dropping their name at a party three months before they started getting popular.

I really like JT, and I can't wait for his next album comes out. Justified was really good. And I'm not being ironic either.

lol, I thought it was pretty good too, it was good for what it is... I think you have to accept it as it is, it is not bad :)

I am a hipster that does get mad when his band blows up. And where do you see indie on the charts? Franz Ferdinand? Please.

Until I see a soccer mom eulogizing Muslimgauze or complaining that Wolf Parade is getting too big too fast, then you can save it.

franz ferdinand is getting lots of attention and play.

It's not about 'selling' when it comes to indie, it's about exposure. Lots of bands that used to be indie are now more mainstream (not in sound, but in acceptance/exposure)

like Modest Mouse, action action, the blood brothers, the Faint, Cursive, Bright Eyes, From Autumn to Ashes, Atreyu and lots of stuff like that. Stuff that a few years ago nobody cared about, now a lot of it is getting coverage and such. Becoming a more 'mainstream' sect of indie music.

sure, there are plenty of indie bands that are truly indie, and i respect that. But it makes sense that bands would want exposure.

What if you're favorite indie band had tons of airplay, sold a decent amount of records, and had music videos played regularly would you consider them indie even though they have the attention of the mainstream? I wouldn't, but I'd consider their 'style' to still be indie, but they're acceptence to be mainstream. There are plenty of bands who are indie that may have reached a mainstream status. Whether they've sold out or not to reach such attention is a different topic.

Well. I think we can safely say that we are discussing the sound, not the ideology.

And I've been saying the same thing for awhile about indie being mainstream. The second Bright Eyes found his way into Spin Magazine it was all over.

However, I rather think you SHOULD share what you enjoy listening to, indie wise, just so you don't sound like a prick. ;-)

yeah. bands 'want' to be noticed.

that's what i'm talking about. There's a certain group of people who will find out about a band, and keep the info to themselves, and their group of friends. And they get all mad when other people have heard of that band w/o the certain group of people telling them. It's weird, but these scenesters will make sure only people they know, know of the band and they want all the credit for making the band big by spreading the name.

Those kids I cannot stand.
