I just watched the video...not bad at all. Do you have links for any other Why? videos?

Which reminds me; I think I posted this a while back, but I'm not sure.

http://docopenhagen.blogspot.com/2005/12/top-50-music-videos-of-2005.html

I pulled that link from Decapolis. I thought some of the videos were incredibly boring, but there are quite a few that are great. I'd never listened to The Magic Numbers before, but "Forever Lost" is a damn catchy song.

I listened to The Mollusk so much at first that I neglected the other Ween material. The Mollusk is still my favorite, but Pure Guava, White Pepper, and God Ween Satan are all great. White Pepper may be the best example of Ween's versatility. I can't believe they can pull off as many styles as they do on a single album without sounding silly.

I haven't had a chance to listen to the others much yet, but I'm sure they won't disappoint.

I can dislike a song but still appreciate individual elements. Can you not do the same for lyrics?

Sure. The lyrics were alright, I suppose. Vague and cryptic lyrics seem to me to be all the indie rage, though.

It would be much easier if you'd simply post a few in this thread.

What genres are you interested in?

blackwasp said:
As The Theory pointed out, this is The Indie Thread. If you'd like to discuss jazz, blues, reggae, folk, rockabilly, bluegrass, calypso, funk, soul, gospel, R&B, or doo wop, start a new thread.

Let's face it, there would be no point. A guy on here started a thread a while back for the few people who wanted to discuss genres other than indie or metal, and, of course, it died out within a few days. I was hoping that some of the people on the indie thread might actually listen to something else. You all adamantly claim to, but don't seem to ever want to discuss anything but indie. But fine, I'll leave if that will make you happy.

blackwasp said:
Many of the artists I mentioned are folk.

BULL-SH*T!!! Okay, I'll leave the thread, I'll leave you all alone to discuss your precious indie-rock, but dammit, I will not tolerate this level of ignorance. Acoustic guitars do not automatically equal "folk." Just because music is vaguely "folk"-ish does not make it folk. Please people, get a clue. Do some research before you make unfounded claims.

Nevertheless, I've enjoyed our discussion. Peace.

Indie is a very ambiguous term. There are some bands that I would label indie that you may not consider indie and vice versa.

For the past week or so, you have been coming in this thread -- the Indie Thread -- making yourself out to be some sort of Musical Jesus that needs to save us from our own ignorance. You seem to be so adamant about the pretense of indie culture, but to be honest, isn't it just as pretentious to be so self-important that you have to get anal about genre definitions and people's personal preferenes, just to validate your own opinions, tastes, and feelings.

I'm all for open dialogue and discussion about music, but it doesn't seem like you are here to discuss, it seems like you are here to preach and tell us the error of our ways. Do you even have favorite artists? Favorite albums? Songs that you listen to when you are in certain moods? Do you actually like music? Or is it just a tool for you get off by criticizing other people for not living up to your standards?

At this very moment my favorite artists in the world are Radiohead, The Beatles, Brian Wilson (Beach Boys), The Velvet Underground, and Ween (and maybe Why?, because I have been obsessed with him for the past few months). Out of all of those, the only two that can be considered indie are Radiohead and Why?. The former, is only "indie" if you define indie as any music that "indie kids" like. The latter is avant-pop/hip-hop that is indie in that it really is part of an independent label and an underground hip-hop/pop scene, but to be honest, his newest albums has received pretty mediocre reviews from Pitchfork, TinyMixtapes, and most other indie staples.

And you know what, I think everyone who posts in this thread can say the same thing. There are very few people here who are not open-minded about other genres and artists. I have been very happy with many of the bands that have been recommended to me by people in this thread. I also enjoy the atmosphere that this thread has, which is laid back and allows different people, who like different music to talk about records they have been enjoying and engage in discussion about them. If I wanted to ***** and moan about other people's tastes in music, and make myself look like a complete jackass in the process, I would go to some snobby music forum. But to be honest, I rather like talking about records and really enjoying music itself, rather than pretending that my opinions are any more valid than those of people who listen to different genres and artists than myself.

Try not to take yourself so seriously, it'll make you look like less of a tool.

There are plenty of "indie" artists who are very blunt.

Let's go with folk, since it seems to incite such debate.

Why would I have to do research to determine what folk is? If Devendra Banhart, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and Joanna Newsom aren't folk, I'm not sure what they would be.

Anyways, nice chatting with you. Hopefully future conversations will be less volatile.

Well, obviously I hate music. Obviously I just spend my time "getting off" by criticizing indie kids, because endlessy arguing with obnoxious, self-satisfied idiots like theFijian is really worth my time and not frustrating and annoying to me...

Look man, I really don't care that you people listen to whatever it is that you listen to. I've consistently tried to be civil and make peace with everyone here (except theFijian, of course) but you'd all still rather lash out at me than just simply disagree with me. I've always spoken passionately (sorry to use such a cliché word, but I can't think of a more appropriate one at the moment) about things that I'm passionate about, and the majority of the people on this thread can't deal with someone who doesn't just sit back and agree with everyone else when they post. The best music conversations I've had with fellow music lovers is ones where we sit and debate over the merits and importance of certain bands and artists, and when two people are passionate about said subject matter, they often get overly-pumped (and to some degree, self-righteous, I'll admit) during the course of these conversations. But, like blackwasp said, it's "all in good fun." I thought that bringing that "carefree, all-in-good-fun, music-lover atmosphere" here would fly, but I was obviously sadly mistaken. If you people want to play the victim here, fine, I'm through trying to stop you. I've taken myself far less seriously than most of the people here (go read my first post on this thread if you don't believe me, it's ridiculously over-the-top), but if you want to twist my words around to sound like I'm attacking you, go right on ahead. Blackwasp initiated a debate with me, and since my style is to be somewhat abrasive, everyone had to practically pee their pants over it. Next time anyone sends me an invitation to respond to them on this website, I'll be a pansy about it so as not to make any waves, and that way everyone can be happy that I haven't disturbed the delicate balance of mutual ass-kissing. And my last few posts have been pretty mellow (with all the cheekiness promptly removed, since it consistently seems to be lost on each and every one of you), taken down a considerable notch, pleeing for peace and civility, if nothing else. I only get legitimately annoyed when somebody makes an absolutely insane claim like saying that Bright Eyes or other such bands qualify as folk---but I guess that's not even allowed. Oh well, peace to you all, and I look forward to reading the indignant response posts sure to follow containing sentiments along the lines of, "Well, EXCUUUUSE US for being offended, but you ATTACKED us!"

Anyway,
However much you hurt me darlings;
I'll always love you,
Your white rioter

I completed my Neko Case collection yesterday (with the exception of Maow, which I'm still debating on whether to get or not)... and I have to say, while her first album (The Virginian) was a tad rough, everything else is excellent.

While I'm leaning toward her newest one being the best, Blacklisted and Furnace Room Lullaby are excellent, also.

I disagree. I really enjoy the feel of Rubies.
If they're good on CD, it's a miracle.

Seeing them in concert made me want to kill myself. And if Mates of State hadn't been playing after them, I probably would have.

I just got back from seeing The Rodgers Sisters, The Ponys, and Art Brut. The opening bands were pretty lame, but Art Brut was great. Eddie Vargos is a great frontman and was a really enthusiastic performer. He's just a mustached thirty-something that looks like the absolute antithesis of rock, but on stage he kicks off his shoes (literally) and jumps into the crowd, runs offstage and appears on top of the bar, and pretty much all-together goes insane. It was a lot of fun. Definitely worth the $12 I paid for the show. Plus, they were giving out free posters, and I was close enough to grab the set-list on my way out.
