Islands' (1/2 of The Unicorns) is pretty good, if you like The Unicorns in the first place, which I kinda did... and I like this better.

Most definitely. I'm not sure I like Islands better than the Unicorns, but their record is really solid.

They are touring with Why? in April, which I will most definitely be going to see, possibly twice. I have been getting all giddy and light-headed just thinking about seeing Why? live, let alone with Islands. Hooray!

i hope it's better than The Unicorns. I also hope it's weirder than The Unicorns.

I was told The Unicorns would be weird... and what I got was lame.

Meh... I thought Islands was largely boring... nowhere near as interesting as the Unicorns. But then I loved the Unicorns. "Swans" is a hell of a tune, though.

You know, I never checked out "The Boy Least Likely To" because both the name of the band and album sounded stupid. Then last week I received a copy of it from Phil and another friend. I wish I hadn't been so bullheaded earlier; I'm really loving this album. It probably would have been in my top 5 albums of last year. Almost every track is beautiful.

I'll also look into Islands and The Unicorns. I have "Tuff Ghost", which has an incredible riff.

Most definitely. Go to My AIM>Edit Options>Edit Preferences>File Sharing. From there you can choose what to share off your computer, and who you'd like to share it with. I set up a music buddy group who can browse and transfer any of my music files. If you get enough friends doing it, it works pretty damn well.

Damn you, AIM. Now it's just giving me different error messages. Now it says to adjust the firewall settings and make sure to have an updated version of AIM. I adjusted all that could be adjusted and didn't make any progress. I'll try the new version of AIM this weekend and let you know if that works.

You say that as if you expect me to give one-tenth of a sh** about it. I don't even know what that entails, really. But if it means that I won't have to see/respond to your asinine comments anymore, I'm all for it. I guess it's always best to just "ignore" people when you're losing an arguement.

Your polemic is very tired. As if we haven't heard before that the rock dinosaurs are better lyricists/performers/whatever than the cool indie hipster bands...

Take a lesson form this poor soul, folks. Don't let your hipness dictate your taste. Good music is good music regardless of era or popularity, I don't care if it came out yesterday, or in 1947, etc.

I still don't understand this. If you refuse to listen to an artist because they're popular within a certain group of people, you're bound to miss out on a lot of really good music. Plus, if an artist is good, don't you expect them to gain some sort of attention?

I agree, but I'm saying that by doing nothing but listing off every hot band, it's easy for someone to write you off as just another "indie kid" who doesn't know anything. Not saying they should, just that they will. I did.

I can understand that someone wouldn't be able to listen to her music because of her voice, however, I find it beautiful. I wasn't asking you to listen to the song. I was only asking that you read the lyrics I posted.

Again, I don't judge songs based on lyrical content alone. It wouldn't be fair.

I am curious in some artist recommendations. Since I'm only listening to "it" bands, I'd be more than happy for you to suggest some better music for me.

I notice that you have a low post count and haven't been around here long.

I'm very thankful for artist recommendations from The Fijian (Belle and Sebastian, Bonnie "Prince" Billy) and Arnold_Philips (The Mountain Goats, Man Man); not to mention all the bands I listen to thanks to philN, The Theory, and nadroj1985.

I think if you'd give some of these posters a chance, you could find some very good music.

Look, I think you've got me figured wrong. I don't even dislike the majority of the bands you posted, I enjoy a lot of them to some degree. I have no qualms about listening to music that is hip or popular as long as it is good music. My goal was just to tell people that there are other things in life besides Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, the Mountain Goats, etc. There's nothing wrong with listening to those bands. But there's also nothing wrong with at least looking into jazz, blues, reggae, folk, rockabilly, bluegrass, calypso, funk, soul, gospel, R&B, and doo wop records, either. Open your ears, lose your prejudices and dive in, people.

I think you would find a lot of us have very broad tastes. Obviously, a thread titled "The Indie Thread" is going to be a less likely place to showcase that. It's just very strange that you would jump on everyone here for liking bands... that you admit to listening to.

If you looked at my list of favorite artists over the past number of years, there would only be one real "hipster" artist... Sufjan Stevens. And the rest would be 16 Horsepower, Sixpence None The Richer, The Residents, and Sonic Youth. I would probably also include The Violet Burning in that list, too.

Point being: just because this is the indie thread, don't assume that those who post here adore Death Cab For Cutie, think The Strokes are the greatest thing since sliced cheese, and would mate with that girl from the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. You'd be as likely to find us (well... me) listening to Steve Reich or Django Reinhardt as The Fiery Furnaces (who's album "Rehearsing My Choir" is insanely good).

I'm not attacking you, it's not my intention to attack anyone here (with the exception of theFijian, who's a complete ass). But, I do think that you're something of an anomaly on this thread. I kind of doubt that many people here besides us listen to Django. Besides, the main person I was addressing here was blackwasp, who more or less openly admitted to having mostly indie tastes. Still, I appreciate the feedback, so thanks. I'd be a hipocrite if I didn't hold myself to the same standards I'm proposing for everyone else, so I'll throw my preconceived notions by the wayside if you will all do the same. Clearly you've already seen the light, as for the rest of you, open your ears to all music, and in turn I'll stop pre-judging you as one-dimensional "indie kids." Peace & love to all.

I just bought my ticket to see Why? on 4/19. I am very excited. From what I hear he/they are very tight live. If you like avant-pop, hip-hop, etc. his new ep, Dumb Hummer came out last month. It's not very long, but the title track is terrific, as is Rubber Traits (the video is available at anticon.com -- very trippy, awesome).


I've been listening to alot of 16 Horsepower and Ween lately also. The Mollusk is so brilliant; it's almost as satirical as it is musically engaging, and the fact that it still sounds so fresh after listening to it for years, is a testament to it's greatness.

And because I'm an in-the-dark "indie kid" that needs to be rescued from himself, I should also throw in the compulsory "it" band. The new Liars album, Drums Not Dead, is pretty interesting. Alot of the dance-punk sound is gone and there's a lot more droning and deconstruction of traditional song structures. I'm enjoying it thus far.

I think you also mistook Indie for Indie-rock. Many of the artists I mentioned are folk, and I also enjoy hip-hop, jazz, R&B, etc.
