The Immaculate Conception "Problem"

There is obviously a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation on the subject.

It is true the EO does not hold this doctrine, but mostly because we have a different view of Original Sin.

Back to the OP, I wonder how much these misunderstandings are playing into the dispute. Are they really arguing about how Mary was conceived? Is there a larger issue at play?

Can you explain that further?

Augustine teaches original sin. Immaculate Conception teaches that Mary was born without original sin, so that Jesus would not somehow inherit original sin from her. It cannot explain how Mary did not inherit original sin from her own parents, except that it was a miracle.
The eastern half of the Catholic Church never read Augustine, so they have no opinion on the matter of Original Sin, and therefore no opinion on the matter of Immaculate Conception

Firstly, my denomination doesn't believe in the immaculate conception. Secondly, I broach this subject because the two Methodist churches in my town are literally having a WAR over this issue, and my church is losing (we're conservative, the other is liberal). Should this even be that BIG of an issue to tear two churches apart?

Well firstly like who cares what your demonination believes in ? What matters here is what the individual believes in or is willing to give respect to.

I think that the split on this issue is a winnowing from God the Father in regards to who will give respect to His Immaculate Daughter and who will not.

It is the BIGGEST ISSUE of your life here and for ever !

Mary is not a focus of scripture; why would you dwell on it and make it more than it is?

Biggest issue???? Bigger than faith in Christ? Not because scripture says it is.
