Well it's just as much as what Jesus said when we think of the parallels between the Pharisees and the elder brother in the Parable of the Two Lost Sons. They formulated what they needed to be right with God and found it incomprehensible that God would accept back the sinners, they were prideful just as the Elder brother was

In my opinion, the parables that Jesus told are true stories --- things He witnessed in His lifetime.

Right, just as most people have never been to the stars. So we see the starlight star bright shining through our window at night. Here, where the laws we know are all we assume exists anywhere. How provincial.Most people do depend on reality to work the same, no matter what the distance is.
