Bonnie's asked me about the GIMP - a completely (legally) free program to download and use to create and manipulate images. GIMP is an acronymn for GNU Image Manipulation Program.
Before I go any further, I should say I've never used GIMP
but it's similar to other programs, and there's lots of tutorials and help out there. So if I can, then I'll help.
To use the latest version of GIMP, you have to download from 1 to 3 separate files. As of today, the latest version is 2.4.2 so I will give links for that. If it's been a few months, you should check out the latest recommended version.
So the available downloads are (download and install in the order they are listed below).
The GIMP Application version 2.4.2 (15 MB)
The English Help Files (16 MB) - there are other languages available, but if you're reading this, you probably read English! If it's not your first language though, download the language help file which has several languages in it (58 MB)
You can also download the GAP (GIMP Animation Package) which is used for creating animated graphics (2½ MB)

There are many tutorial sites around -

If you downloaded the Help Files above (which you should
) then you can start GIMP, go to "Help" on the menu and move down to "User Manual"
