  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Bonnie's asked me about the GIMP - a completely (legally) free program to download and use to create and manipulate images. GIMP is an acronymn for GNU Image Manipulation Program.

Before I go any further, I should say I've never used GIMP  but it's similar to other programs, and there's lots of tutorials and help out there. So if I can, then I'll help.

To use the latest version of GIMP, you have to download from 1 to 3 separate files. As of today, the latest version is 2.4.2 so I will give links for that. If it's been a few months, you should check out the latest recommended version.

So the available downloads are (download and install in the order they are listed below).

The GIMP Application version 2.4.2 (15 MB)

The English Help Files (16 MB) - there are other languages available, but if you're reading this, you probably read English! If it's not your first language though, download the language help file which has several languages in it (58 MB)

You can also download the GAP (GIMP Animation Package) which is used for creating animated graphics (2½ MB)

=========================================

There are many tutorial sites around -

GIMP video tutorials on YouTube

If you downloaded the Help Files above (which you should ;)) then you can start GIMP, go to "Help" on the menu and move down to "User Manual"

The GIMP Official Site Tutorials

The installation looks the same because it's all GIMP using the GIMP Windows installer but they are different files. One is the application, the other the help files.

The GIMP Application version 2.4.2 (15 MB) is http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-win/gimp-2.4.2-i686-setup.exe

The English Help Files (16 MB) is http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-win/gimp-help-2-0.13-eng-setup.exe

If they were the same, when you downloaded them, they would have overwritten each other (if of course you saved them to the same folder)

When you hover over the links and look to the bottom left of your browser, you will see the address where that link is going to take you to :)

okay get this file "gimp-help-2-0.12.tar.gz" and SAVe it to your harddrive. when done open and extract it (winRAR is a good program for this part), then cut and paste the resulting folder fromwhere you unzipped it INTO the gimp directory.that should install it for you.
If you have a newer version no problem just do the same thing.

OH ok will try again, thanks

which would be better to run or save?? Think I ran the program, if save can they be in c document??

You can put them anywhere - Yes, C > My Documents if you want to :) But choosing "Run" should also be fine.

oaky do you have this file? gimp-help-2-0.12.tar.gz

This is a zipped file, and I don't think it's for Windows. All the Windows installers are http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html which is a link given directly from the main GIMP page (GIMP was not originally written for Windows).

:) Sorry, forgot about WinRAR - but the Windows installer should be the easier route and means you don't have to worry about downloading that.

I downloaded and installed it all earlier today just using the links I gave in the first post

I'm glad you got it all installed  Yep! Lots of learning time now... Well, we're here - and Warrior's used it and I've seen some of Warrior's graphics  which I assume are done with GIMP :) (is that right, Warrior?) - so she will have lots of "know-how" :)

You did tell me the brain isn't as fast as it used to be, and I told ya you had a good brain in that head of yours... And it's gonna be good and last many more years yet! You're doing great  :)
