Hey guys I was wondering if someone could shed some info here, I thought I would try this board for awhile, espcially for this question.

Tradition has it that Simon Peter was the first Bishop of the early church, but today I watched a special on A&E which had some hot shot theologine say that actually James was the first bishop, then he quoted Paul from Galatians maybe. I'm confused now...

Could anyone shed some light?

Good Day, Tiger

Do you happen to have the verse, or the name of the theol. on A&E. I recall hearing something like this about John and James based on the name change for these men to "sons of Thunder"

Mar 3:17 And James the son of Zebedee, and John the brother of James; and he surnamed them Boanerges, which is, The sons of thunder:

For His Glory Alone!

Hey man, I'll get the name and the verse tomorrow, luckly I have it all on tape. He was actually talking about James (brother of the lord) the one in Jerusalem.

Let's just stay away from what "brother of Jesus" means. ;)

IMHO, the Twelve (the original Twelve less Judas but plus Matthias) exercised collegial authority, with Peter as their leader but not in a monarchical role over them. :priest: Paul and Barnabas were later added to their number, and James the Just, "the brother of the Lord," took the place of James of Zebedee when he was slain. (As already suggested, let's avoid arguments about his precise relationship in this thread.)

So James (the Just), functioning as overseer (bishop) of the Jerusalem Christians and therefore the "host bishop," served as the spokesman and chairman for the meeting described in Acts 15, usually called the Council of Jerusalem.

Orthodox and Anglicans believe this collegial model to be the proper mode of church leadership, and try to continue it to this day. Catholics and Protestants, for differing reasons, will of course have different views about this.
