  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sounds interesting. Can Hobbits join in?
Of course! Hobbits have many of the same problems elves do! You know: food, pale skin, pointy-ear-issues, lots-of-hair-issues, gardening, being outside, etc. *laughs*

Hmmm, let me see...

I cannot seem to find a Quenya word for "poor" so... the closest thing I can find that is sort of like "poor you" would be to say "humbled you." That would be "nuncumnatye." I suppose it would just be easier to say "Nanyë nyérinqua" which is "I am sorrowful."

Does anyone know what it would be in Sindarin? I know that "Goheno nin" is Sindarin for "I'm sorry," but I am not sure about the other things. Unfortunately, my Sindarin dictionary is at home and I am no where near my house right now...

Mae Govannen, mellonae.

I would be glad to do so. To which poem, though, are you referring?

Also, I have found a music file online that is a woman singing the original, Sindarin version of "Elbereth Gilthoniel" in acapella (sp?). It is quite beautiful once you get over the fact that it slightly sounds like she is trying to sing it opera style and not how Elvish should be.

Oo, sounds very interesting, could we hear it? Do you have the link? I think Lubi was referring to the poem you were asking us to translate for the contest.

Ah, yes. I shall certainly post the poem and its translation. As for the music file, I got it from a download service called Limewire, but the details of the song are that it is called "Elven Hymn to Elbereth Gilthoniel - Elvish" and it is by a group called "The Tolkien Ensemble." It is 2:08 minutes long. They also have an English version that is twice as long. But of course, you do not get the same effect of hearing the Sindarin tongue from listening to someone sing in English.

The Warrior Stars

On an ancient path the warrior walked,
Alone in a World full of evil.
The elf was the son of a great warrior,
A warrior from over the Sea.
For many years he traveled,
From the east to the west
And from the north to the south.
Ever and always he longed for his lover
For she was taken from him long ago.
The elf made his way to Mirkwood
Wishing to find the end of the trail.
Coming to the city in the forest
The warrior walked amongst the houses
And the streets always wishing to see her.
At last he met a dryad.
The lady from the forest spoke to the elf
Recalling that she had seen
A band of Dark Elves taking an elf away.
The thought filled him with terror.
The Drow were not a loving people.
The warrior knew what he had to do.
Going from that place for ever
The elf began to traverse the land
Never ceasing his longing for.
Today he is still seen traveling
Through the night sky.

I think the Sindarin is (roughly) Im naer - which translates to (approximately) I am sorrowful. Not entirely certain of that though.... :sorry:

Here's a Quenya lesson I ran across just for fun:

see the tree: á cenë i alda.
The tree is tall: i alda ná halla
see the tall tree: á cenë i halla alda
see the elf: á cenë i elda
the elf is in the tree: i elda ná aldasse
the elf has a bow: i elda harya cú
see the orc: á cenë i urco
the elf kills the orc: i elda máca i urco
the orc is dead: i urco ná qualin
praise the elf: á laita i elda

Beautiful indeed, morvaltur. So is this a legend of how the constellation was created that we Men of later times call Orion?
It has more of a legend or ballad feel to it than a poetic one. As for what it is about, I suppose it could be that. I was not thinking about that when I wrote it, but it certainly fits. Actually, this poem came about because my English teacher recommended that I try writing an epic. Well, then I decided to write it in an Elven tongue, and a Quenya epic was a bit out of my time and skill range. Thus, it turned out to not be so long.
