I can see the "Brave New World" example has gone way over your head.I take it you don't believe a person can "go bad" and use his God-given gift against Him?
God can call men into the laboratory, just as easily as He can call men into the pulpit.
But men in the pulpit end up turning against Him, and so do men in the laboratory.
It's like a man giving his son a rifle for Christmas, teaching him to shoot, and years later he shoots his dad.
Nimrod is a good example of a man who used his God-given talents (or gifts) for good; but later went off-course and used it to do something evil.
I think the term for that is: backsliding.
The fact you admit a person can go bad is an act of free will; much like a scientist can intellectualize is an act of free will and not a gift from God.
If you believe God should take the credit for the benefits of intellectualization the same applies when things don't go right such as your Thalidomide example.
