Yep,

The PHB, DMG and the Monster Manual are all considered Core books for D&D/d20.

You can find almost all of the material, minus fluff text, online for free at Wizard's of the Coast's website, under d20 system. It's called the SRD (System Reference Document). It's the free part that companies can use to create their own d20 approved products. It's missing the experience table and experience reward table, the first of which is found in the PHB, the second of which is foundin the DMG.

Where and how do I get the experience tables? Is there any way I can get them legally and free, without having to get the PH and DM?

If they are using the d20 logo, then no, they cannot have their own exp. tables. Somewhere on their product they are required to say "Requires the Players Handbook" Remember, the exp table is the same for each class. I'm not talking about the tables that show what each class gets at each level, I'm just talking about the table that shows how much exp it takes to get to each level. The chart in the DMG tells you how much exp the party gets based on the CR of the opponent compared to their level. You can always determine a different way to reward exp, however.

You can always get a used PHB on ebay.

The XP tables are really easy. It's 1k/level, per level.

So, if you're 1st level, you need to gain 1000 XP to make 2nd. If you're second level, you need to gain 2000 *more* xp to make 3rd. 1 3 6 10 15 21... Easy enough.

If you have a parental issue with the darker aspects of gaming, I would avoid Ravenloft. We both know there's nothing wrong but...

Do you have a Wizards of the Coast store near you? They are going out of business (their retail stores) and are marking down game books 25 to 40%. Also, they quit selling 3rd party d20 stuff this summer. There MAY be some left going for 75% off...if you are lucky. I got the Ravenloft core book and every single Judge Dredd rpg book that way.

Forgotten Realms seems to be a fan favorite. I like good old Greyhawk (generic D&D). My groups gameplay is adventure to adventure, the gaming world isn't really a focus.
