Hundreds have died, tens of thousands are infected, and the illness has spread to dozens of countries as officials try to contain the infection.

As I am making this thread news came that the first person in the US has died of the coronavirus, in Seattle.
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2020...-outbreak-latest-updates-200226003835539.html
At least 80,000 people worldwide have contracted COVID-19, a previously unidentified strain of coronavirus first detected in late December, likely at a since-closed seafood market in the Chinese city of Wuhan. Officials in China implemented travel restrictions in an attempt to stymie the spread of the disease, but confirmed cases of the illness have still been reported in at least 45 countries and territories outside mainland China to date, according to CNN. COVID-19, short for “coronavirus disease 2019,” is the disease caused by the “SARS-CoV-2,” according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC)’s summary of the situation.

The International Health Regulations Emergency Committee of the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a “public health emergency of international concern” on January 30, and on January 31, the U.S. followed with a declaration of a public health emergency from the Health and Human Services Department.

The 2019-nCoV infection is deadly. According to the CDC’s summary of symptoms, “reported illnesses have ranged from infected people with little to no symptoms to people being severely ill and dying. Symptoms can include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.”

In the US so far there've been 60 confirmed cases so far, with the latest person diagnosed on 2/26/20 having contracted the disease from an unknown origin. Donald Trump is undermining public health officials & more focused on containing any criticism of him than the threat. During the ebola crisis during President Obama's administration Trump made over 100 tweets vilely attacking the president & focusing on drawing attn. to himself, but has now done the same things he'd attacked the president for. In 2018 Trump fired an entire pandemic response team of command & failed to replace them. He's spread totally debunked anti-vaxxer myths so him wanting to now diminish the threat of the coronavirus outbreak bc of hopes of a vaccine for it - one that couldn't possibly come out in time to tackle the current outbreak - is audacious on an epic level. He's now spreading nasty myths that immigration is at fault & calling the crisis a hoax designed to make him look bad. He is the one who makes himself look bad.

Wanting to know thoughts on this from other zoomers. I'm hoping @Stanfordella will return if she gets the chance bc this is her exact area of study but she's been super hectic busy so Idk if that's gonna happen. @Zoii please tell me what u think

Trump has contradicted his own health experts on the threat of the coronavirus. He fired an entire pandemic response chain of command in 2018 & failed to replace them. He's appointed Mike Pence, who thru zealous ineptitude contributed to the HIV outbreak in Indiana when he was the gov. & who undermined public health officials by downplaying the harm of smoking & trying to diminish its link to lung cancer. Rush Limbaugh, a proxy of Trump, kicked off the nasty & delusional hoax that the coronavirus was a hoax to make Trump look bad. He's got advanced stage lung cancer & has long been a smoker. Anyone claiming that Trump hasn't undermined the threat of the coronavirus is ignorant of or indifferent to the actual facts.

Do not post here if you're not a Zoomer.

I am old what is a zoomer?

Gen Z is a Zoomer. If you're old you're probably a Boomer / Golden Eagle! :)

  • GEN Z------------ born 1999 to 2015.
  • MILLENNIALS--- born 1984 to 1998.
  • GEN X ------------ born 1965 to 1983.
  • Golden Eagles-------- born 1946 to 1964

Idk what you are if you were born before 1946. You're a child of God no matter your age. You just can't post here.

Yes it absolutely is a global public health crisis when the facts presented by credible public health officials & epidemiologists are actually considered. Not the alternative facts presented by Donald Trump - the dude who spread a hoax about President Obama having been born in Kenya & windmills causing cancer; or Pence who downplayed smoking & it increasing the risk of lung cancer & also helped fuel an HIV outbreak; or Rush Limbaugh the smoker with advanced lung cancer who has spread Trump's newest conspiracy theory on the coronavirus.

The flu is definitely a big deal as well. One Trump hasn't given much attn. to until now. But that doesn't negate the seriousness of the coronavirus outbreak & it's enormous ramifications. It's foolishly & recklessly shortsighted to not look at the wider-reaching impact of this crisis. But just like ppl have paid no attn to the section this is in & posted anyways they'll also totally overlook facts.

I'm going to give more credence to the public health officials around the world who've said that yes it absolutely is a global public health crisis than someone on here who cannot even bother to look at the section where he's posting, or read any of the multiple of posts explaining it. Trump has a long history of gaslighting & disseminating hoaxes, but a virus cannot be gaslight. It's indifferent to whether you're a Republican or a Democrat & it's impacting ppl around the world. We're in a connected world where what happens elsewhere does in deed impact us. Anyone who fails to understand that this is a global health crisis is either ignorant of the actual facts or indifferent to them.

On Feb. 29 which is the day I started this thread there were ppl who were sneering, ridiculing, parroting Trump's conspiracy theory that the seriousness of the coronavirus was a "hoax by the Democrats" & calling it ridiculous to say that the coronavirus is a global public health crisis. I knew then that it was a crisis and they'd been infected with misinformation. There's now 121,000 cases worldwide & it's been declared a global pandemic. More than 1000 in the US when Trump mocked everyone & said there'd be maybe 15, tops.

I'm angry at the incredible selfishness by Rush Limbaugh & Donald Trump who made what was already going to be stressful & difficult that much more!!!!

This is a very very serious crisis. It's worrisome. It's upsetting too that Trump & Republicans have made a situation that's already stressful that much so by claiming it's a "hoax by the Democrats" & other nonsense. Matt Gaetz mocked the seriousness by wearing a gas mask to Congress. Now one of his constituents has died. He is in a quarantine bc he was exposed to someone w coronavirus while at a conservative convention. One that Mitt Romney is probably super glad to have been disinvited too now.

I do hope Ella's idea for a public health forum is put into place. ASAP.

Until then.

I really recommend trying to just filter out Trump's actions as much as possible & focus on what the professionals have said. Look to them for honesty.
